Doesn’t happen with all modules and maps, but I haven’t worked out which yet. Don’t know if this is a VR only thing or not. I also get a same black background weirdness when I see the rotating plane thumbnail on the weapons select page in mission editor. This started happening when the new memory manager was introduced. It's one of the reasons I wish the new memory manager could be turned off for high-end systems: it introduced nothing but problems and didn't fix anything (on my system at least, I suspect only people with low-end systems will notice a performance difference).
