Lock On has horribly unoptimized special effects (fire, smoke, explosions, craters) - that's a fact we all already know. There are FPS drops connected to bugs withing LOD system too (like infamous R-77 model bug).

It's not a bug really. It's just lack of some sort of position prediction in Lock On's network code when packets are lost.

I would mention the lock on's competitor which also have gorgeous image and wonderful multiplayer experience.

I'm running an Amd64-2800, 2G of ram, video card is an ATIx850. Driver version ATI 17.3. A few weeks ago I put the newer drivers for video card on and I lost performance on a large scale in lock-on. Removed them and then reinstalled 17.3 and I'm back to past levels. Now running 1600x1200 and getting 30 frps and higher. Now I did lower most of graphic levels to medium to low, but when flying, your not out for a sunday drive, your out for a mission, and you need top performance of all resources. Ask around for ways to tweek what ever system you are using and most likely you will find out. Sometimes it's a minor adjustment and not always reaching for that EASY Button of Staples.

Im no expert but I would say the graphics are more demanding especially groundwise, missile physics especially online where there can be upto 10missiles to be accounted for between just 2 foes.

Just like the real thing the more modern the technology ,the more power required.

Naaa... it's not the GPU that's being uverloaded (flying low and over cities) but the CPU. You can test it yuorself by just lowering your resolution to min, disable all AA/AF and see what framerate you get compared to normal settings (resolution etc *things that affect GPU only).

I have to concur with Kuky... Its been proven time and time again... This game is a CPU hog and there's no getting around that.. Therefore there's unfortunately no easy fix for low FPS here.. I you really want to improve it you'll simply have to get a more powerful CPU and that most likely will mean a new motherboard as well...

If your going in that direction its better at go with a new build ... This is a reality of flight simmimg, and one of the issues that has plagued the growth of this community for quite a while...

In a world of xbox's and playstation's there really aren't many guys that want to spend upwards of 3 K for a new rig every 2 years or so...

I would but then this is my hobby... And I'm not a casual virtual pilot...

My original LOMAC PC was exactly what silverliu has now. It ran the game just fine (but obviously still took FPS hits in certain situations). I think the problem may be vid card drivers and over-optimistic graphics settings. One can't expect much of the candy with that system.

As far as multiplayer, LOMAC's network code needs to send and receive MUCH more information than IL2's. Plus it is not the best net code ever written. For example, I can host 2 clients in LOMAC with no problems, host 3 and pings start to grow. In IL2 I can host more than 10.

But in IL2 you have no radar, no ECM, no EOC and no advanced missiles....that will all effect the CPU...and the net

I guess it's bit of both... some aspect of the game is one, others the other :D

Short story...

Silverliu,

I feel for you brother, when I started playing LO I had a Dell 2350…:(I tried to play LO and all I got was garbage on the screen. So I turned to HL and asked some questions and found out I needed a video card…:doh:I went and bought an ATI9200, put it in and garbage came out. Asked HL again and found out I needed more then 256 of ram. So I bought and up-graded to 512 of ram. Worked good but not as good as some, so I bought an ATI9250 video card, believe it or not, LO worked like a charm. But I ended up buying another card, FX5500 and it too worked well. Then after a small sodering accident (trying to wire some fans together with the computer running, by the way is not a good idea) which burnt out my MB and PSU… I was about to tap out of the flight sim world. But after 3 days of crying :cry:my wife let me up-grade (not to much) a little. So I bought a BFG6800GT OC, new MB with AGP slot, gig of RAM and an X Connect 550 PSU. A new CPU was out of the question so I took what I could out of the deal. As you can read my road to playing LO has been a long and hard one. But, with the help of the LO community I’m still here after three years or so.

Don't give up!!

P.s. Although I do still bare the scares of all the “LoL” I got when I announced I just bought an ATI9200 in the chat on HL.
