mariner3302 Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 I found something thats really made it hard for me to believe the Hornets flight modeling... I forgot to put my wings down with a full bombload off the Cat yesterday so I thought lets see today.. Uneventful Cat Shot, a little mushy but not uncontrollable. Fired AIM-9s off the folded tips and then came around and attempted to land. Right down to the ball I had it under control but then it got mushy again and I had to eject. If I had had more fuel I would have took it back around. Anyone else done this? The link is for the .trk file of the flight. https://www.dropbox.com/s/pr951hko9aiqskt/Flying%20wings%20folded%20Hornet.trk?dl=0 i7-7700K, 32GB DDR4, 525GB SSD, 1TB HDD, GTX 1080Ti 11GB, Liquid Cooling, Win 10, Warthog HOTAS, TPR Pedals, HP Reverb, Oculus Rift with Touch, Jetseat and bass shakers, PointCTRL, and Scale F-14B Cockpit
StandingCow Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 Why would you think it wouldn't be flyable? There is still just enough surface area still for lift. Although according to a thread I found flying with folded wings may still be a WIP part of the flight model: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=208658 5900X - 32 GB 3600 RAM - 1080TI My Twitch Channel ~Moo
mariner3302 Posted August 1, 2018 Author Posted August 1, 2018 Its obviously not modeled. Folded wings knock 25-30% off your needed lifting force. The wingtips up generate no lift. i7-7700K, 32GB DDR4, 525GB SSD, 1TB HDD, GTX 1080Ti 11GB, Liquid Cooling, Win 10, Warthog HOTAS, TPR Pedals, HP Reverb, Oculus Rift with Touch, Jetseat and bass shakers, PointCTRL, and Scale F-14B Cockpit

I didn't suggest the wingtips provide lift when folded, but the entire wing isn't folded. There is enough wing unfolded to provide enough lift to get the aircraft off the ground. From the thread I linked, the wings on this thing are small and it gets off the ground: 5900X - 32 GB 3600 RAM - 1080TI My Twitch Channel ~Moo
Esac_mirmidon Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 This was discussed before. Yes, its possible. Yes, some real example happened before with F-4's and F-8's. " You must think in russian.." falcon_120 Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 Already discussed. It is yet WIP. For example you should not be able to launch your aim9. However, it is totally possible to fly with wings folded. There are examples of F4 and F8 flying with wings folded. http://ontheroger.proboards.com/thread/6003/folding-wings-35s https://theaviationist.com/2014/02/19/us-navy-fighters-folded-wings/
