I posted not so long ago about building a new pc for work/dcs but decided to wait for the 2080ti to see what the deal with that is and build a pc specifically for my work requirements.

Now that the 2080ti is out I'm gonna get my DCS machine sorted. I'm going to be playing DCS on an Alienware AW3418DW 34" IPS WQHD HDMI Curved Gaming Monitor

The specs of the monitor are:

34 Inch Screen size

3440 x 1440 Resolution

Ports - HDMI DisplayPort USB

G-Sync

21:9 Aspect Ratio

Refresh Rates - 100 Hz

Curved screen

4 MS Response Time

What processor would be best matched with the 2080ti for soley DCS? There's a part of me that's just thinking about buying this pre built gaming pc but with a 2080ti

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ocuk-gaming-germanium-overclocked-gaming-pc-intel-core-i7-8700k-4.9ghz-fs-1bw-og.html#t=b2

Or is the 2080ti going to be a waste of money over a 1080ti on the monitor I'm using?

Posted

depends on how much you value your money, a massive price difference but not a huge preformance increase, read some reviews and make your own mind up

I am sure as certainly not selling my 1080TI and getting a 2080TI

I dont think the 2080ti is a waste if you own none right now.

WQHD is even more demanding than what I run with QHD and I have to struggle to maintain 60fps with all maxed out details, so I had to dial back the shadows to medium to have constant 60fps+ anywhere.

Since the 2080ti has 20-50% more power depending on the game, it's a very welcome boost.

Just if you own a 1080ti and would roughly have to add another 800 bucks after selling your 1080ti is not an option for many, for me neither. I dont make money that easy to throw it out for 5 fps more. In your case, when you build from scratch, I'd go for a 2080ti as well, only the ti, for the 11GB VRAM.

CPU..well..tbh..tho Intel is the fastest, I would get me an AMD, most likely I'd get me Threadripper 2950x and if that is not your taste than take a Ryzen 2700x. If you go Intel, then for sure this 9900k is the new king for just under 500€. I think, the memory bus us far too small for so many cores and they all lack PCIe lanes. Hard to say, the 2950x for sure is a beast to consider when building a rig for years to come, cores, memory bus, lanes, multiple nvme directly to cpu...all those goodies.

Tho I think most buyers/gamers will go 9900k or 2700x as those are cheaper to build.

Nothing wrong with buying a 2080Ti if your budget allows for it, especially for a new build. Nothing ill advised about not upgrading if already in possession of a 1080Ti as well. My chain of thought behind GPU's is buy the best single gpu that you can as long as you're not currently CPU limited and it will last you longer than any other option, even let you skip generations. And you never know, ED might actually listen to folks if enough of us beg very kindly for DLSS implementation. Wouldn't hold your breath on that though, but more likely the more of us sporting RTX cards in our sigs.

Things to note - in reviews using DX11 titles we've seen CPU limitations up to 2560x1440 on an 8700k @5.0ghz with 1080Ti (easily solved with supersampling). 3440x1440 might be a different story, at roughly 1.25 million more pixels. 2080Ti probably the highest performing option for VR right now, which you might find yourself interested in down the road.

After switching to my Samsung Odyssey personally I couldn't go back to flight sims on a monitor. I still use my 3440x1440 monitor for other games though and still love it. And have been thinking about my next GPU upgrade ever since I got it. Never bought two GPU generations in a row and I wasn't about to start with pascal. It's hard to describe the immersion of VR to someone who hasn't experienced it, other than saying everyhting's lifesized, and in 3d with depth perception, and from the perspective of actually sitting in your aircraft. Although it helps if you know you aren't overly prone to motion sickness. I could spend all day on a boat.

I'm a little salty that Asus hasn't given a release date for the Strix 2080Ti, as I'm in love with the RGB provided by my mobo/ram and case fans, and I'm having a debate on whether I'm going to wait for that or order an FE model and be done with it, but, if I get my card before you build your new rig I'll take a couple flights pancake style and let you know what kind of gpu usage I'm seeing.

2080ti is poor value. 2080 is poor value at 200-300.00 more than a 1080ti and with 3gb less ram and similiar performance. Get a 1080ti and pair it with a i5 8600k and get it overclocked to 5.0-5.2.

I have been building PCs for the racing community (iRacing) to include real pro drivers and peak pro drivers for awhile now. I can beat any prices by a longshot. Contact me if interested.

9900k and 2080ti looks like the best combo. Disappointed in the lack of PCIe lanes on the Intel consumer platform though.

Are you based in the UK? Been thinking about giving iracing a go. I track an M3 GT4 and a 911 GT3 RS. I’ve never been into racing games much because of what I’ve got in the garage. Instead of loading up a game I can jump in the real thing.

Yes, but you're only doing track days. That's very different to racing. Plus, you can race anytime you want with guys around the world.

I've been into race sims for 20 years. I also did real racing. Nothing is a substitute for real racing but when you get too old to do real racing the sims are a lot of fun.

iRacing is strictly online racing and it can get expensive. There's no AI. I had $800 invested in iRacing before I finally said enough. I got tired of being taken out by some snot nosed kid who couldn't drive and then getting cussed out by him. Racing the AI is more peaceful and just as competitive.

I like the old 60's F1 cars, so my favorite sim is Grand Prix Legends. It's like BMS. It's an old game that has been constantly upgraded by the community. Lot's of fun.

Lot's of other sims if you like GT cars.

New built solely for DCS

it can be expensive if you want it to be. same as dcs.

it can also be fairly cheap. as there is free content cars and tracks of different types. same as dcs.

if you buy everything, yes, that adds up. same as dcs.

it all depends how much you want to spend

Posted

They get you buy offering series races. To race them you need all the tracks in the series. If they add tracks the next time you need to add those too. Then they'll temp you with a new car and series and it starts again.

The problem is, if you don't race the popular series you don't have that many to race with.

After doing it for years you spent more than you planned on. GPL is free and the competition is just as hard.

The real sad part about iRacing is if you decide to not pay the monthly fees anymore, all the content you bought is unavailable. So, I spent $800 and I have nothing to show for it.

technically, you never own any software. you only license it.

in the case of iRacing, the license is for the online use. like a SAS company.

if you ever go back online with iRacing, all your content will still be available and ready to use.

I know all that but every sim isn't like that. I don't even know another one. Not sure why you're defending them? A lot more have left iRacing than are still there by a long shot.

We're way off topic. This won't last long.

not defending. just correcting a few of the statements.

A lot more have left iRacing than are still there by a long shot.

like i need to do here. while your statement is possibly true (they offer a lot of short term introductory offers and discounts), it’s a statement of FUD.

in actuality, iRacing has stated they have more paying members now than ever before.

i get that it’s not your thing.

thats cool.
