I was wondering if night sky banding is a VR issue or DCS issue? I notice this in the Persian Gulf and Nevada, I think Nevada is worse.

Thank you.

i had banding with the rift...actually with the lenovo explorer nights are perfect

I see it has a lot to do with the gamma settings.

I would like to be able to leave the gamma set to 1 global setting and have it right for all mission terrains, day or night...don't think that's possible, at lease with OR.

I fly night missions and full moon missions all the time. I see banding on flat screen too. I haven't tried experimenting with the gamma settings for night time though. So I don't think it's just VR. Display settings and general display quality should also play a factor. rtings.com test TVs and monitors on the quality of blacks and shadows. Some displays are better than others with blacks and gradients.

As an example 06:00 is a good time to see this at its worst. I can fix the banding by adjusting the gamma up but then I don't see the early morning sunrise as it was meant to be seen.

In answer to OP's original question I would simply say it is a DCS issue in VR. Banding was always absolutely appalling in VR in 1.5 (but not in monitor flatland) and remains a problem.

See this post and following discussion for what is very likely the cause, and even a mod to improve things.

IMHO, VR at night should be the ultimately engrossing VR experience, such a shame that in DCSW it's just so very, very poor. You only have to look at a recent popular space sim to see that it doesn't have to be this way.

Thank you.

At sunset/sunrise ish times, when there is a great gradient change, I have a very noticeable banding too in a standard monitor. I solved using a reshade plugin.

Thanks all for this information and confirmation. I'll just adjust the in-game gamma to smooth things out until it's fixed.

Hippo I have installed the registry mod for mura affect and the darker black mod as well.

i have not the rift since december last year...so i don’t know if something changed but back then the banding was terrible despite the gamma settings (i remember that i tried every possible settings)...

Now with the Lenovo explorer every night is a real night....

Still, getting there... I suspect that E D would have to make substantial changes specifically for VR to improve the night environment, which is quite a big ask.
I apologise to ED and take back my first comment. More a case of it's an Oculus Rift limitation that will require considerable work from ED to minimise.

All still speculation from me, btw.
