With only Mk-82 AIR's loaded, in the MPCD - STRS there are two different OSB's at the top to select, when I only have one type of bomb

What does that mean?

Whether it's going to use the high drag or low drag mode

So not only do we have 3 different versions of the Mk-82, but some of them have different modes?

Can I read about this somewhere?

If this confuse you would hate RL settings, since there are dozens of different fuses, each with a hand full of settings and you can combine different fuses in the nose, the tail or both on the bombs. Finally each bomb could be wire differently, meaning the external arming wire that as the bomb drops will activate different things like fuses or chutes or fins.

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.

I'm hoping we can do these in DCS one day. Can't even imagine the fun.

It's not so much confusing, but having no source for concise information.

You don't have that even in the military. You need several books to get the information. There are AMMO books ( these guys built and maintain the weapons themselves) , Weapons loading books and there are pilots books.

Reading up in all of the different real life manuals and books about it might be a bit overkill, though. At least for some of us, I guess.

Simply put: for Mk-80 series, the larger the number, the heavier the bomb.

The Mk-82 comes in 'regular', 'Snake-eye', and 'ballute' flavours.

While technically different, the 'Snake-eye' and 'ballute' ones serve the same purpose and have two modes each: high and low drag.

High drag deploys their special features, making them slow quickly so you can drop them from very low altitudes. Setting them to low drag turns them into regular Mk-82s.

You are correct, most pilot I met will just know:"if you put the thing on the thing and press the pickle button stuff happens"

Thanks! This helps.

But looking at photo's of the Snake-eye and AIR variants, if they don't deploy their... 'plumage' at all, won't they be less stable than the vanilla Mk-82?

A propose bomb delivery, has LOFT been implemented already? Any tips?

That makes sense. Weapon flexibility is vital for combat efficiency. AV-8B sorties for low level strike with MK-82AIR or Snakeyes. During ingress, the flight receives a divert to another target. Marines in contact, need CAS, and that AV-8B flight is closest. Because of circumstances, JTAC needs freefall MK on target. Flight lead instructs his/her flight to switch to low drag delivery of carried ordinance. In CAS, HD bombs have higher CP then un-retarded munitions. For CAS, in NATO doctrine, anything less then 400 meters from own troops, is considered Danger Close. For contact with enemy at 200 or less meters, that is calling fire on own position. At 100 meters, direct fire weapons only, and 'Fix Bayonets' time. CAS air crews have to extra cautious, to to reduce blue-on-blue collateral. But for outnumbered, possibly outgunned, Marine in close contact, CAS with high risk is preferable to no fire support. In fire support doctrine, all aircraft delivered fire is considered indirect fire.

Well, laughs aside, if we agree that the answer to straightforward and rather specific questions should always be: «Here, read these 800 pages!» we might just stop having a community and have a bot give that reply to everyone.

Thanks! This helps.

I'd assume you are right and it does have a certain effect, but I don't know how pronounced it really is. At least in CCIP deliveries my experience is that the deviation is small enough not to be noticed. Perhaps somebody with a more precise bombing hand will tell you otherwise, though.

I can only hope for that to be the case. That would be nice.
