I was shot down after attacking a Mirage on the flank at 3 miles, with two AIM-9, was avoided without even launching a flare. This is the second time that happens to me. I have been with the Hornet since its launch and the AIM-9 has never failed in this way. I did a visual follow-up with the RADAR turned off until I could attack him clandestinely, but neither of the two missiles hit him.

Maybe 3 miles is excessive, but at the time of the attack I had my target in visual and did not make any maneuvers to evade my attack, simply the missiles failed. The sensor gave tone and enslaved the enemy, I do not understand.

Track-file or Video, or it didnt happen!

I tried to take the track but it was not recorded entirely.

DCS stopped working three times in one hour.

The f18 can fly at like supernatural angles of attack, sometimes the missiles can't keep up. I notice that with guns, too. Consistently shooting behind. Lead more, wait for a better angle, or use the 9x which has thrust vectoring. You can practically shoot that sucker over your shoulder.

hard to say without a recording,

but il take a guess. Did you make sure to uncage sidewinder when you get a good tone?

Actually I was wondering if anyone had noticed any failure, but the title of the thread changed.

Thanks for all the answers. Yes, I've been with the Hornet since its release and I've never had problems with the AIM-9, it's the first time it happens to me and I wanted to find some explanation in case someone had noticed something similar. He was dominating the situation, between the mountains coming out on the flank of an enemy in visual, he did not even do anything to evade them. I had a tone and the sensor enslaved the target, inexplicable. Sorry I can not provide more data, but the server crashed and the track was not saved.

Hello atazar,

"The sensor enslaved the target", is a little vague and prone to confusion.

Did you used the uncage function, that allows the AIM-9 Sidewinder seekerhead to self-track the target ?

Or did you just point the small circle in the HUD, listened the audio tone and shot ?

Thanks Top Jockey

Affirmative, I used the lock / unlock mode as usual until now. The Mirage did not make any maneuvers to force the "G" of the missile and also did not fire flares. Do not worry, I do not intend to lengthen the thread or cause discomfort. They changed the title of the thread, because I assume that I know how to use the AIM-9. Thank you all.

After thinking a lot, the only possible explanation is that the velocity of the mirage was 700 knots at the time of the attack from the flank and the missile did not have enough energy to reach it. At the time of the attack I left a turn and it is possible that it was below 400 knots, almost without power. Although one of the times the Mirage came to me at 12. Thank you all, for my part there are no more doubts.

I've had similar issues with the 9L. I posted about it here:

It just seemed like, for an all aspect missile, that it could not even lock on or hold a track unless it was in the 6:00 lethal cone. Drives me crazy. They didn't used to be that way.

Thank you very much, I thought it was just me ... It's what I was looking for, to know if it happened to more people. In my last video, the 7th minute, I try to block a contact to a mile with the AIM-9X and after a few seconds I have to resign and change the weapon. Patience, maybe I'm too clumsy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBO_7fXjTdQ
