Yeah, ground based awacs woild be nice too.

Do you mean GCI (Ground Comtrol Intercept) ?

AFAIK it does work on Red side, but not on Blue side.

But that’s another topic. By the way, Air Defense ships should be able to direct fighters too :music_whistling:

+1 This should be sorted out as soon as possible. Especially as DCS seem to be expanding the naval side of sim.

I would say +1 but there should also be the option for the ships to go radar silent

Yup, Ships should be able to:

1. Turn off the radar(s) (in combination with maneuvering this should make HARM's fairly useless)

2. Have actual countermeasure fire (chaff/flares/JAMMERS etc)

3. Maneuver if fired at

4. Visual/IR smoke screens as appropriate (part of using CM I guess)

5. Have a compartmentalized damage model (i.e. different hit locations for different things)

6. Realistic sinking time

7. Damage control to bring things back online

8. Participate in link16 or other relevant networks.

9. Work/maneuver as a part of a SAG/CVBG as apropriate

In summary, Ships need a whole-lotta work in DCS...

Sadly in most online MP environments people just park them and use them as a new and interesting type of sam site, which is really really sad. But given the current state of ships in DCS I'm not sure much more can be done online with them.

At least, give ships separated radars for EW, STR and maybe CIWS, and make those radar destroyable should be doable within reasonable time frame.

Honestly a lot of the stuff on that list could be implemented at a basic level fairly quickly.

Countermeasures, mainly graphical given the way chaff/flares actually work in DCS. And graphics/effects is something ED does pretty darn well.

Ships "dodging" at the last second, again, similar to the "scatter" code the ground units parked in the middle of the field have.

I don't know how different it would be to have a ship as link16 donor vs something like an AWCS but on the surface it doesn't seem that hard.

I don't entirely blame ED for MP mission designers using ships as static costal sam sites. But I bet the reason they do that is that having ships moving around is probably a performance hit, either graphically or with "pathfinding". I can't imagine it would be hard for someone to setup some sort of box type patrol pattern and have an OHP do that for a few hours.

Actual ships on DCS has not assigned radars to antenas on search mode and fire control radars has only animated, that not have a "real" radar operation assigned, not have a connector with the radar "project" the radar cone as a figher. Land systems use the same system, a oversimplified radar simulation.

Some example, a O.H. Perry Frigate:

DCS Lua version.

Fire control ("animated")

set_recursive_metatable(GT.WS[ws], GT_t.SS_t.MK92_CAS_WS[1]);

.....

set_recursive_metatable(GT.WS[ws], GT_t.SS_t.MK92_CAS_WS[2]);

.....

set_recursive_metatable(GT.WS[ws], GT_t.WS_t.ship_MK41_SM2 )

.....

Radars (not animated or connector assigned).

GT.Sensors = { OPTIC = {"long-range naval optics"},

RADAR = {

"Patriot str",

"perry search radar",

}

}

Real O.H.Perry.

Fire control:

2x Mk92 fire control radars

Normally Mk92s can guide 2 SM-1 to diferent targets to SM-1MR or one mk92 guide one SM-1MR to a target and other Mk92 make fire control to Mk75 gun.

The search radas has a air to air SPS-42 radar and a SPS-55 surface radar.

Other missing capability has none capability by modern ships to atack sea skimirs targets or aircrafts by naval guns, chaff, flare and decoy launchers, ECM and ECCM vs missiles and more.
