So as I undertand selecting the PH to "active" on the RIO's weapon control panel commandes the Phoenix to go active off the rail, while still being guided by the WCS until you break lock. Does this have any limitations on range or any other disadvantages? Because I don't see a reason to no launch the Phoenixes in active mode all the time. Relying on the WCS/AWG-9 to send the active command sometimes does not work that well in combat.

maybe the missile battery will run out too soon, dont know if this is modeled though

I'd presume that the missile will also go for the first target its radar detects once it's active?

That would be less then ideal, even more so if there are some friendlies between you and the target.

I guess it might be useful if you expect to be shot at and need to make a defensive break or something and thus lose the lock before the missile gets the go-active command.

By setting the switch to PH ACT you command the WCS to immediately send the active command, the missile will then lock onto the first target it sees. IRL if it didn't find a target it would still listen to commands if you're in a PD mode. That's not currently modelled though as we have limited control over the seekerhead in DCS.

So in DCS in that case the missile will go active immediately after and launch and will not be guided by the WCS and hence won't be able to fly range efficient profiles?

DCS Panavia Tornado (IDS) really needs to be a thing!

So within DCS this aims the seekerhead at the currently locked target and launches it active? When no lock is present, does this also act like a "maddog" button that launches the missile along the ADL? (As would be the case in ACM BORESIGHT mode).
