Only when you have an AUTO bombing profile and the bomb selected are you able to designate an A/G TGT via the HUD. This seems odd to me... is this a bug or can you really not designate, via the HUD, a target except with AUTO bombing in the real Hornet? To note if you designate a TGT via the HSI you can actually slew it on the HUD even without an AUTO bomb.

TGT waypoint is function of navigation set by HSI push button and not A/G master mode or weapon profile. Last time I checked (yesterday) it was working fine. Maybe I misunderstood your statement above though.

A waypoint is just one way to designate a TGT. Will also be able to do it with targeting pod and A/G radar and such. What I'm saying is you cannot designate a TGT via the HUD unless you have an AUTO bomb profile selected, yet you can always designate one via the HSI.

You’re correct and HUD target designation is still not implemented. Hopefully soon. Hopefully it will also include the ability to designate target through the JHMCS as well as setting markpoints that way.

It's my guess that the terrain elevation database will need to be implemented first, before any other A/G designation method will be possible.

Currently it works simply because you input the ground elevation manually in the NAV system. HUD, TPOD and JHMCS designation will likely require r, theta and z variables (or x, y, z). The pilot designates with the range and azimuth and the system needs to know which elevation corresponds to that point.

Quite right, but the system can use 'Air to Ground Ranging' radar mode to generate a slant range for the same effect.

Currently in fact, if you slew the TGT diamond in AUTO mode, we can briefly see 'AGR' in the HUD. It doesn't do anything at the moment though (presumably), since AG radar is not working obviously.

The elevation data, called DTED in the hornet and DTSAS in the a10c, is something that I brought up a few times since I joined the forums. Its something that ED never replied back when I mentioned it so I suspect classified data or something sensitive is preventing them to talk about it. It is quite possible that the Hornet is NOT able determine elevation based on just coordinates like the A10c does. This may be due to the fact that the hornet has AG radar to perfectly determine elevation at forward points.

Anyway, I really really hope this is some day clarified by ED, but the huge amount of silence every time the DTED subject is mention makes me think it will never be clarified.

It's probably not classified capabilities that's preventing ED talking about it. More likely a lack of resources / commitment to fully model DTED when they can easily 'cheat', and disregard target elevation in bomb calculations. Unfortunately 95% of users don't / wouldn't notice anyway.

I know and I was very happy to see the AGR cue a while ago (got excited kinda for no reason, the AG radar is still in the horizon).

I don't know how to it's done IRL, it might be a combination of the two; honestly, I don't know. My previous comment was mostly based on my knowledge of the A-10C and the simple fact that you need 3 coordinates to define a point in space. In any event, I think we're going to see the DTED or something equivalent before the AG radar.
