It’s there to warn you that the your barometric altitude is IIRC 10% different to your radar altitude.

DCS AJS37 HACKERMAN

There will always be bugs. If everything is a priority nothing is.

This light is one of the most annoying "bugs" in DCS. In level flight that light should NOT be on.

The basic function IRL is like this; Every time the ALT HOLD function is engaged, the

red light should be OFF. The light should come ON when the Altitude read by the Radar Altimeter is less the 80% of the altitude of engagement. So,

if the A/P is engaged at 500m QNH LD and the Radar Alt is the same then the light will come on when the Radar Alt is 400m or less.

If the A/P now is disconnected and then reengaged, the light will now be OFF. Now the Radar Alt will have to be 80% of 400m for the light

to become red again.

The red light is a VERY serious warning and not something we diregarded IRL. The light

is a warning to the Pilot that something has changed after engagemant of the A/P and every

time this happened, we ALWAYS checked the reason. We NEVER disregarded that warning!!!!

This is what should be, but not how it is currently implemented, is it?

They way it currently works for me (OB 2.5.5.32533) is the following:

Fresh mission start, cardridge inserted and loaded.

Departure from Senaki, main altimeter set to 0m before takeoff (QFE).

Flying to 500m brings the altimeter reference line in the ADI to center.

Engaging ALT HOLD brings up the red warning.

I investigated this issue, and found out following about the altitude hold:

  1. When used over sea level it seems to function correctly (no false warnings).
  2. When used over elevated land:

  • As the hold is engaged the reference altitude seems to become the altitude over sea level (pole heights reflect this). I think the reference should come from main altimeter.
  • The altitude warning light is activated if the altitude in main altimeter is below 80% of the engaged reference altitude.

The fix could be as simple as taking the altitude hold reference altitude from main altimeter instead of using altitude over sea level.
