Bahnzo Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 I've been looking at what uses the most system resources when I play DCS, and it seems it's really my video card which is currently the bottleneck. I'll list my relevant specs: Geforce 750 TI 2gb Gigabyte 970A-DS3P motherboard with 16gb ram AMD 6300, 6 core, 3500mhz. 650watt PSU I've done some reading, but I'd like to hear from others who keep up with this stuff. I've read a lot of good things about the Radeon RX570 6gb card. I'm trying to stay under $200, $150 would be better and this is right in that range. My worries are I don't keep up with this kind of stuff anymore, so a) what's a good card to upgrade to, and b) can I use it with my motherboard? I think I've got plenty of headroom with the PSU, so it's a matter of being sure I have the right slot.
Svsmokey Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 (edited) Interesting question ! What makes it so is that both cards are spec'ed for a PCI 3.0x16 motherboard slot , and your cpu supports 3.0 . But your motherboard is apparently PCI 2.0 . So while the 570 has the potential to double the performance of the 750ti , the guestion is will the 8gig vs 16gig/sec difference in PCI spec bottleneck the 570 ? I think not , but can't say for sure . Rtx 2080ti's run on 3.0 , so i think the 570 will be ok on a 2.0 but... The other thing to check is to ensure that your power supply has an 8 pin (or 6+2 pin) PCI express power cable available for the more powerful card . Dudikoff Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 (edited) If you're on a budget, perhaps try buying a used card which is still under warranty. E.g. for the quoted 200 USD, you can get a used Vega 56 which will run circles over the 570. You won't get the most of it with that CPU, but still. etherbattx Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 +1 i’ve purchased a number of used cards, some with warranty, some without, some of them were even bitcoin miners... and never had a problem. working electronics don’t fail very often
Bahnzo Posted July 26, 2019 Author Posted July 26, 2019 I was wondering about the used route, but also kept hearing "Don't get a card used for mining!" as if there was a way to magically tell one. Or is there?
Svsmokey Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 Everything i've read suggests mining cards are good candidates . It seems miners set the fans to max so the cards run cool . I would be more worried about a gamer overclocking the hell out of a card than a mining card . In any event , aren't the Vega cards power-hungry and thus poor candidates for mining ? If you still have reservations about buying a mining card , find out how many the seller has for sale . 9700k @ stock , Aorus Pro Z390 wifi , 32gb 3200 mhz CL16 , 1tb EVO 970 , MSI RX 6800XT Gaming X TRIO , Seasonic Prime 850w Gold , Coolermaster H500m , Noctua NH-D15S , CH Pro throttle and T50CM2/WarBrD base on Foxxmounts , CH pedals , Reverb G2v2
BitMaster Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 A friend and me were mining for 6-9 months with 1-2 cards, 980GTX, 980ti-GTX, 1080ti's. All of those cards were undervolted, underclocked and they all still run great, a year after stopping mining. Sure, some cards ( where eöectricity was cheap or stolen ) were running full-tilt and maybe even hot all the time. That you cant put aside, but I guess most were used like I did it to maximize profit, energy/profit balance.
