Bearfoot Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 The simple answer is, of course, that I am an idiot and a crappy flyer (would not want to use the term "pilot"). I would still like to know "why" as in the mechanics of what I might be doing wrong. OK, I've read that we should just use the AoA and ignore the E-bracket when landing. I can work with that. But the OCD imp in me wants to know why is my E-bracket all the way up there? I know my AoA is not correct, but it's not THAT incorrect is it? I have to pitch up 80-90 degrees to get the waterline with the E-bracket? I thought it might be my speed, that E-bracket stays up there even when I bring my speed down to 200 knots.
Emmy Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 The E Bracket on the Tomcat doesn’t reference the same as the Hornet. Don’t expect it to fall in the same place in the HUD. Chuck_Henry Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 When you're on-speed in the F-14, it lines up with the miniature aircraft symbol, not the FPM/VV.
Larkis Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 Try to put the plane-symbol on the +10 degree position and reduce speed unril the Ebracket comes down. When the ebracket is on the Nose symbol you are onspeed.

You're way too fast even for an emergency landing. No wonder E is up in the sky. Try around 140. Win10 i7-10700KF 32GB RTX4070S Quest 3 T16000M VPC CDT-VMAX TFRP FC3 F-14A/B F-15E CA SC NTTR PG Syria
legearre Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 Gear down, speed brake and DRS out, trim for 15 units AoA. If vertical velocity in the 500ft/min-ish, your E bracket will be about where it should be. That said, like the earlier comment, you don’t fly with the E bracket like with the 18. Trim/dirty-up (unlike the hornet every pitch change requires a trim change), get on glidelope, and let DRS do the work for a great trap Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

legearre Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 Sorry, was watching some F1 and had DRS on the brain. Meant DLC... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Bearfoot Posted August 11, 2019 Author Posted August 11, 2019 Thanks for the responses. Yep, I figured from other folks with first-hand experience to ignore the E-bracket to work the pattern/recovery, and from reading figured it worked differently than the Hornet. Was still wondering why it was stuck up at the top. Your responses helped me figure that one out too: Even though my pitch angle was in the ballpark, I was going (way) too fast! I guess that's why it's called "on speed" and not "on pitch"!!!
