Steam DCS 2.5 user here.

Not long been into DCS. Few months.

My first post.

Came over from other flight sims because of VR.

Loving the look of it so far. (theres a lot I wish it had but that’s for another time.)

However, noticed some very strange AI flying behaviours. Must be a bug.

Just having fun with the mission editor. Adding flights and generally messing about. Threw myself in to go fly with these AI along their flight paths.

(bit of formation flying and sightseeing)

They tend to jump about a lot. One second doing 240Kts and then suddenly shooting backwards and the being sling shot 100 Meters or so forward when they turn. Its almost like bad lag on old games in multiplayer.

This is just me in single player with a PC far over and above the recommended specs.

Also, a group of a10 was set up to fly at 300 feet around a course taking them over mountains and over woodland areas.

When I caught up with them in my F/A 18 there was only 2 out of 4.

Now I appreciate there is a skill level associated with AI, but crashing into the ground at default setting (or even at any skill level) is a bit ... well... bad really.

( I guess that’s what happened to them. Should have saved the track to watch I guess. But I am new to this!)

Dogfighting is a lot of fun and I have no issues there. (even on the odd occasion I’ve seen the AI hit the ground which in a dogfight is believable)

The behaviour of the AI doesn’t seem to be connected to one type of aircraft. I’ve seen it on 3 types so far.

It seems to be when they turn. They sort of snap turn and drag themselves in and out of alignment before they settle down to where they should be.

Just wondered if there was a fix imminent?

AI in DCS is... stupid. They use different flight models, are scared of going low and yet like to fly into the ground when a steep incline is ahead of them.

Let's hope they'll rework the AI.

Hi cptmrcalm

if you attach an example mission we might be able to offer suggestions, you can change the behaviour using advanced waypoint actions.

Hi there.

It was literally just plonking in a 4 ship of aircraft - randomly selected. It just so happened to be a group of Harriers I selected from the list.

Just clicked 5 waypoints or so - randomly around and then the last one landing at the airfield. Then throwing myself in as a F/A18.

Wasnt wanting anything spectacular. Was literally just to have a look in the Nevada desert.

But saw it happen with some A10s and then some f16s too in another mission. SU25's as well when they took off and turned to their first waypoint. So its not unique to a mission or a plane.

AI planes dont fly naturually. Its like they fly on rails and the code forces them to suddenly slow (unrealistically) and then shoot forward to correct the time loss.

I can see whats happening and I hope it gets corrected soon as its quite immersion breaking not to mention dangerous if you wanted to close formation fly!

I get the advanced waypoint options and its nice that they are there for you to fine tune what you want happenining. But this is just basic flying I am refering too.

Trying to sell this game to others and a couple of people I have shown the sim too have winced at the AI planes flying in front of us.

They are xplane and MS Flight sim lovers and I was trying to show off the VR to them. Needless to say it didnt help when they saw the planes suddenly snap-turn -darting to the right when they were following them.

I use words like: "shame" and "pity" not because I think its a bad sim.

But at times, when you are really immersed - part of you believes you are in another world as you get more and more involved in the flight.

When you see the AI behave like this you are reminded that it is a Sim and the immersion is broken and the world feels artificial in an instant. Hence the "pity" and "Shame".

Hi there. Finally managed to get a bunch of F15e's to refuel with a tanker.

Flew up to them and formation flew with the last of the 4 ship.

Watched the first refuel fine. When done, he fell back. Well back actually. Like - very far! (maybe just trying to follow the waypoints again. Thought he would wait for the crew to finish and then they would all fly off together to continue their waypoints?)

When the rest of the bunch moved to take up their positions it was like Darth Vader was onboard the KC135 and "forced pulled" them towards the tanker! lol

They slid sideways as if on rails.!

Second one went in and refuelled ok too, but the third decided it might be fun to just sit 10 meters above the tanker and stay there for the entire time.

Out of curiosity - I was able to intervene and refuel my own jet. I did this in the hope that it might somehow "wake" the AI up. But it didn’t. He just stayed there.

I post this - not to bash the sim or to exercise a bit of hate. Far too old to be a troll.

Its just something I think anyone would agree is quite a serious bug.

I wondered if something was being done about it and when we were likely to see fixes?

This sim seems fine if you just want to go off and dogfight - or maybe drop a few bombs on something. But when you want to fine tune your mission and try and add in some AI to the mix, its little things like this that just spoil it.

Again- not slamming it. Just reporting it and asking a question.

I’ve just bought the f16 and now I got to say, I am a little reluctant to spend any more for the time being.
