What would make a pilot do such a violent maneuver so close to the carrier?

It just doesn't seem rational to me, specially if it was done on purpose.

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.

My guess is he exaggerated on the pull. He seemed to be quite fast in the approach, so I'm guessing he wanted to go around.

Still, I didn't know the FBW allowed such AoA suddently as shown in the video.

Any thoughts?

Could it be the the automatic landing system? I did not know the SU-33 was FBW

If I remember correctly, the Su-27 has fly-by-wire, this being analog in early versions and digital in the upgraded versions, such as SM.

My guess is that the Su-33 has it as well, considering it was developed from the Su-27.

A ground-based interceptor lifts off from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. The launch was a

test of the Ground-based Mid-course Defense element of the Ballistic Missile Defense System.

The missile successfully intercepted a long-range target launched from Kodiak, Alaska. (U.S.

Yes, I thought the same, I suppose landing was the trickiest part of this flight in case of blocked brakes!

OMG, I didn't pay attention to a name of the video (тормозы = brakes)

lol, one SU-33 makes almost crash on landing (cobra style 1m above deck), the other fullburn brakes on hehehe, I guess in any other airforce they would be grounded in anyway.

I don`t think they have more incidents than the NAVY`s Hornets, and these are not grounded, so...

Well I guess there`s been some misunderstanding. MoGas was talking about Su-33`s and not their pilots so I assumed he meant grounding the aircraft. It seems he meant the pilots. My bad.
