Alfa Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Danish military "ditches" F-35 Citing sources in the armed forces, Danish national TV reports today that the evaluation commitee for the selection of new combat aircraft for RDAF will(not confirmed yet) recommend the F/A-18E "SuperHornet" as replacement for its current fleet of F-16s. The tender which has been running for years originally involved the EF-2000, Dassault Rafale, JAS-39 Gripen and F-35A - the EF-2000 and Rafale were excluded early on and for a long time only the Gripen and JSF remained with the latter being the overwhelming favourite since Denmark is participating in the development of the F-35. However, recently Boeing joined the tender offering the F/A-18E and it now looks like the winning bid. The decision is ultimately political, so the defence recommendation is not the final say, but considering it comes as a result of a comprehensive evaluation with independant revision, it is difficult to see it being overruled by the political establishment. JJ
Pilotasso Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 When there is a "winning bid" before the tender is actualy over, usualy is a method of putting a pressure on the other manufacturer for a better offer. :) .
Wilde Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 When there is a "winning bid" before the tender is actualy over, usualy is a method of putting a pressure on the other manufacturer for a better offer. :) I think you misunderstood. The committee didn't pick a winning bid. They just seem to say it would be better to pick SH from defense perspective. It seems as if they think the F-35 is too expensive and will be available too late. I'm pretty sure the ultimate decision will be made by the parliament.
Pilotasso Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 No I didnt misunderstood, there is no winner untill the tender is over, untill then anything goes. .
Alfa Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 Basically what wilde said :) There has been a lot of political critisism of our involvement in the JSF project - whether the aircraft will end up being too expensive and whether we "get our money's worth" in terms of participation in the development(sufficient level of "tech transfer" and sub-contracts). Whereas it always seemed that the military had made its mind up in favour of the JSF from the get go - I remember there being something of a political "scandal" a few years ago when the RDAF's official web site on its inventory page showed the F-35 as its future fighter.....i.e. as if it had already been picked despite the tender being in its early stages. So its really surprising to me(and I think to many others in this country) that its the military's evaluation commitiee that now makes this recommendation in favour of the Superhornet and that cost is at the heart of it. I suspect it could have something to do with the number of aircraft they(the defence) can realistically hope to acquire. Our fighter fleet has been reduced in numbers several times over the years - most recently from some 70 units to just 48......with the spiralling cost estimates of the F-35, one of the opposition parties has raised the question of reducing this number even further. JJ
zakobi Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 Choosing the SH over JSF makes sense as we still need a minimum number of aircraft at any given time.
