Who knows, maybe that's just how it is for now, the F-22 isn't like that.

Why are all the possible lid contours on this plane made so visible?

Different ram is used on heavily used panels. f-117, b-2 and other stealth aircraft look the same way. it makes it easier to remove the panels for maintenance.

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.

So they are putting a more durable ram there? Why is F-22 not painted like that, like Cali said?

Not more durable, easier to remove. The F-22 has the same thing, but it does have less panels that requires access on daily operations, AFAIK. Additionally, when a panel need removal in a 22, it takes longer to remove and repair because of the way the RAM is used. Here an example of the F-117, you can see all the panels with the lighter color RAM.

My opinion, not an expert. Never worked the F-22 nor F-35.

PS

Another thing to remember, that is the Navy version of the F-35. It will have additional requirements for the coating to help control corrosion. More than likely it will use different RAM as F-22.

When a buddy showed me and a few of the guys I worked with the 22 a few months ago, it was no where near that. Wish I could have taken pictures, but I didn't want a cops knee in my back with me eating pavement.

awesome photos.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

Ask your friend how long it takes for the "martians" to remove the spray coat and how long to apply it, then you know why the switch back.

Martian is a nick name for MARS personnel. MARS=material repair

LO keeps Raptors off radars

LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. - Senior Airman Victor Sylvan, 1st Equipment Maintenance Squadron low observable aircraft structural maintenance journeyman, removes a panel from an F-22 Raptor in preparation to apply low observable coatings. Low observable is the process of a coating stack being applied on an F-22 that makes it invisible to radar, allowing the aircraft to remain undetected. (U.S. Air Force photo/Senior Airman Dana Hill)

A troop I had back at Luke is x-training into LO, why....I don't know. I know it's not fun removing that crap and I wouldn't want to do it.
