Have you tried in dedicated fullscreen? It's the same? I'd also suggest that you run the card at default settings (no OC at all) and try like that. Is DCS the only 3D application that does this? What about drivers?

I had a looksee at your video... I can definitely see what you're getting at.

The GTX 980 Ti version is a good performer even by today's standards. It should run DCS pretty well! It's roughly the equivalent of a GTX 1070, or maybe an RTX 1060.

I notice you're using the latest Nvidia driver, ver. 441.20.

Have you tried reverting to an older version of the graphics driver? Sometimes, new drivers mess around a lot with DCS World, and it can be a real booger to sort out because it depends a lot on which graphics card you're using.

First, try deleting the fxo and metashaders2 folders from your Saved Games folder, and try that. If that doesn't work, roll back to an older Nvidia driver and try again.

Also, make sure you're running a clean system--try shutting down any and all extra programs you're running in the background, which can cause stuttering. Finally, if possible make sure you're using G-Sync/Freesync (adaptive refresh) because it works wonders in DCS to reduce stuttering. I'd consider it a must-have for this sim.

no go

thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it a lot!

I tried:

DDU nvidia drivers uninstall, and reverted to version 332 from 441. no go.

all background apps closed. no go.

game on full\windowed screen. no go.

v-sync. no go.

gpu stock settings. no go.

cleaned mods from install command. no go.

tried other games - working great!!!

there is this weird behavior where I can hear periodical and constant spikes in gpu usage - then the fan kicks in. it stops abruptly and then the fps drop and the stuttering occurs. just like the video shows.

I'm kind of at a loss down here...

Checked the video..hmmm

First, in that specific video. your card hits the power limit defined by the cards firmware, thus you see a back and forth or up & down with clocks. User error, do not push the card harder than it's firmware allows is maybe a solution. It has nothing to do with temps, watts and ampere are the measure in that case.

You should try to DOWNCLOCK your card by 5% and see if that helps, you can leave the power limit high, just downclock it, gpu and vram, both. If that cures it, your card or better specific model + firmware do not allow the card to pull enough ampere in stock and highly overclocked settings, the power limit slider just doesnt go further to the right.

..again, downclock the card with the powerlimit at normal or even high. That will tell you if that is the case.

so, I followed your advises and here are the results thus far:

first, disabled over clocking of the gpu. this made the power draw and gpu usage fluctuations issues go away completely. game ran smooth at 99% usage and around 50 fps @1080P.

I thought it was strabge, because I had this OC setting for the better part of a year without any issues. so I checked nVidia settings, to find out the gpu was on "optimal power" and not "prefer maximum performance", so I changed it.

then, I wanted to see if the OC is an issue - I ran 2 hours of gpu stress testing on the highest OC I could get without frying the chip (higher than before). It was stable and smooth, no crashes and no fluctuations in gpu usage or power draw.

Tried this with 6 other intense games, and no issue whatsoever.

then booted with over 23 backround apps, and still everything ran smooth, even in DCS.

I thought I nailed it...

only to see that after some fiddling` in the game and several restarts later, the issue went beck up again!!

cancelling OC did nothing in this instance.

a day later, everything seems cool again.

I can only conclude that this issue can be classified as INTERMITTENT for now...

any thoughts?

For a solution...no.

For the PCIE being gen 2, i would not worry about that.

But i would turn some of the game settings down to a point where it does run smooth and does not clog up the GPU and then leave it there.

Having some headroom makes gameplay a lot better even if it costs a bit of those nice grahpics.

..or a SSD firmware bug. Like the Pilot with that PNY drive from this week where I thought he'd be plagued by this DASHOST.EXE network issue. Turned out his SSD was the bad guy.

I think it has something to do with MP. in an offline scenario, gpu usage is 100% and fps doesn't drop from 45.

in MP, gpu usage is fluctuating aggressively from 0% to 45%, fps at single digits
