I have a doubt I hope it can solve. I am a little confused between the A-A ACM (air combat maneuvering) and AACQ (automatic acquisition) modes. I know that the ACM is for the acquisition and engagement of targets at a short distance, to select it you must be in AA mode and press the FWD sensor, then, once in ACM you can choose the GACQ (gun acquisition) sub-modes with sensor right, BST (BORESIGHT) with sensor FWD, VACQ (vertical acquisition) with sensor AFT and WACQ (wide acquisition) with sensor left. Instead, how is AACQ selected and how does it differ from ACM? Thank you.

ACM and AACQ are not different modes. ACM (Air Combat Maneuvering) is the "Mode" and ACM has four sub-modes that can be selected depending on situation during close combat:

• GACQ (Gun Acquisition): automatically enabled with air-to-air guns are

selected

• BST (Boresight): searches targets out to 10 nm

• VACQ (Vertical Acquisition): vertical auto-acquisition search pattern covers

from -13 deg to +46 deg, searches targets out to 5 nm

• WACQ (Wide Acquisition): space-stabilized mode that can be slewed using the

TDC controller when uncaged, searches targets out to 10 nm

Think of of it as "Tuning" the ACM mode for specific situations.

Automatic Acquisition Mode (AACQ) is selected from the BVR RADAR modes, like RWS. It is not selected from the ACM modes. When in a BVR RADAR mode and the TDC cursor is not over a target symbol, the RADAR will attempt to auto lock the nearest target in its search pattern when the Sensor Control switch is moved right. AACQ searches for targets out to range setting of the RADAR. If the RADAR is already in ACM mode, selecting AACQ will exit ACM mode and return to last BVR mode.
