Sliceback Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 Hello all! I started flight simulation back in the Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator Days circa 1998 or 1999. I got sooo excited to see MS CSF2 and got into that until IL-2 came out. I followed that series for quite some time and flew on line quite a bit under the call sign Sliceback which I registered here with. I followed that series until my computer wasn't keeping up, another child came along, then a move and a huge remodel, then I opened a brewery... I didn't think about flight sims for some time until I started working on my PPL here in the US. I got into that and started in with X-Plane to learn procedures, IFR, etc. Then this COVID19 outbreak started and I saw the writing on the wall and knew I wasn't going to be finishing my PPL this year between the closures and financial chaos..better to keep my money in my pocket than in my flight instructors pocket for now. So, what to do and keep the aviation passion burning? DCS of course! I am new to DCS, maybe a month in figuring everything out. I heard about DCS on Vincent Aiello's excellent Fighter Pilot Podcast! Started with the TDP-51D, bought a TM Warhog HOTAS and some Crosswind rudder pedals and put my CH and Saitek stuff on the shelf! I bought the P-51D, BF109 & FW-190, WWII Assets Pack, and Normandy Map. I am implementing Helios on a touchscreen and starting to learn the FA-18. I bought some other maps, planes and modules and I am really stoked to pursue this in parallel with General Aviation. Any old IL-2 Pilots around here? I wish I could remember then name of my old squadron... Cheers!

Lupus4 Posted April 19, 2020 Posted April 19, 2020 Yeah, I flew IL-2. :pilotfly: Started with it in about 2006. I've recently been flying IL-2 BoX (as it has come to be called I think) and am beginning to discover DCS. “If you're in a fair fight, you didn't plan it properly.” ― Nick Lappos "If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it's an outstanding landing." ― Chuck Yeager "Anything in life worth doing is worth overdoing. Moderation is for cowards." ― Shane Patton
greco.bernardi Posted April 19, 2020 Posted April 19, 2020 (edited) Yeah, I did fly years IL-2 1946 and many times online in warbirdsofprey.org server. But i start with a Sierra and Microprose games. The "F15 strike eagle" at Apple2e was my first fly game. And Chuck Yager´s Air combat the first PC fly game.....IL-2 1946 the last simulator before the Clifs of dover ruins. After that i find the DCS, but The best of all and what i hope and want to see in DCS is something like Microprosse 1942 Pacific Air WAR gold... Its the best of the best in my opnion! I still have a box and CD. Edited April 19, 2020 by greco.bernardi
mungo13 Posted April 20, 2020 Posted April 20, 2020 Are we now proudly talking about how old we already are and what "once upon a time great now absolutely classic oldschool" sims we played? OK, I am in: Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Their_Finest_Hour_(video_game) Red Baron https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Baron_(1990_video_game) F29 Retaliator https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F29_Retaliator Probably in thi order. And some other classics, but these were my starting point. Thus I came from the propellers' world into jet era and continued to the space (X-Wing). Those were the times my friends - no-one quarreled about the fact that pressing backspace action is not compliant with NATOPS page 487 line 36, and negative G carburetor starvation is not fully modeled for the Hurricane
Sliceback Posted April 21, 2020 Author Posted April 21, 2020 Welcome to DCS. Amazing you bought all these gear and DLC's this fast (did you know that, as of today, all modules are free to try for a month?) stevie 1strof.com I had a good portion of the hardware from other flight sims...just the Warthog is new since I didn't have a throttle suitable for twin jet engines (I did my first couple of flights with left and right thrust mapped to my Cessna panel's throttle and prop axies ;-)). As to modules, yup bought a couple and then saw the announcement Friday that this month is free. Will definitely give the A10C and the Harrier a go. Original thinking was the modules were on a pretty good sale.
rinkerbuck Posted April 21, 2020 Posted April 21, 2020 Their Finest Hour was really THE SIM.. well "sim" is loose here, that originally got me into the flight sim genre and started my interest in world war 2 history really. Later really enjoy Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe and Chuck Yeager's Air Combat was also a favorite. Great summers I missed in my teenage years staying in playing that haha.
