Bearfoot Posted May 4, 2020 Posted May 4, 2020 (edited) I am curious what folks do when there are some sort of air defenses. I find computer target mode very accurate --- I just have ground designate very crudely and that is enough for the seeker to find the basket, and then can rely on the laser guidance to make up the slop. But my gameplan is not great when there are SHORAD SAM's, as I come in high (>10-12K) so I can designate the ground point from a distance. Do you folks fly low, pop-up and dive in CCIP? Or do you use computer target mode? If so, how? Edited May 4, 2020 by Bearfoot
QuiGon Posted May 4, 2020 Posted May 4, 2020 I pretty much always use Manual Bomb Mode with LANTIRN deignation flying high up (sometimes 40k+ ft). Works pretty well against most SAMs as they can't hit you that far up. Intel i7-12700K @ 8x5GHz+4x3.8GHz + 32 GB DDR5 RAM + Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 (8 GB VRAM) + M.2 SSD + Windows 10 64Bit DCS Panavia Tornado (IDS) really needs to be a thing!

RustBelt Posted May 4, 2020 Posted May 4, 2020 For a GBU someone else is running Laser for, I like to toss em. Come in low and fast, Full burner 40 degree climb, toss and buggout. If the laser guy is doing their job they always find the dot once they start pitching over at the top of the ballistic curve.
mikpen14 Posted May 5, 2020 Posted May 5, 2020 Believe the real lantirn was limited to 24,000ft, or it started to overheat! Can someone in the know please confirm that?
Bearfoot Posted May 5, 2020 Author Posted May 5, 2020 Pre-2001, electronic components in the laser receiver would arc causing a fire above 24 or 25K ft (? something to do with the ionization of the thinner air?). As the LANTIRN could not be jettisoned, this would make for some rather lively conversation in the cockpit, I imagine. Post-2001, upgrades/fixes allowed for operation to 40K ft. Not modeled in DCS, though ...
QuiGon Posted May 5, 2020 Posted May 5, 2020 By "manual" do you mean pilot bomb mode (CCIP)? No, I actually mean Manual mode. If you're working with the LANTIRN you don't need guidance from the nav computer, as the LANTIRN itself will guide you on target. So it's common practice to use Manual mode for LANTIRN operation, as it removes all sorts of CCIP/CCRP symbology from the HUD as it is not needed. Oldfox Posted May 5, 2020 Posted May 5, 2020 Did some tests yesterday on target lased by JTAC. Wasn't sure it is possible to toss. Designation in computer release mode as far as possible (when designation cursor in hud just stops flashing), then massive toss with burner and big pull. Can achieve some good stand off distance it works well :)
