In this particular mission I arrive at waypoint 2 in my Viper and pick up two Flankers to my North at about 80nm.

They've got their R-27ER missiles which they seem to fire at around 30-40nm. While I've got a few AMRAAM.

So I've tried this a few times now and it always plays out the same. They fire on me at 30-40 nm, I go defensive and while I'm defending the missiles the Flankers move in and clean me up with their IR missiles.

I'm not sure what to do here. When they fire on me, I turn away defensive and drop altitude, obviously losing my radar lock in the process, from which point they have me at a severe disadvantage. I'm trying to defend while maintaining and idea of where they are with my RWR but then by the time I've dealt with their long-range R-27s, they're all over me with the short-range IRs and I'm lucky if I can avoid one, let alone 3 or 4 of them.

Any advice on this would be great. Can't really think what else I can do to increase my chances of surviving this and actually firing on them.

You aren’t flying a plane against a plane. You are flying a program controlled by human decision, delays and inputs against a program that is controlled by a silicon

chip that has an absolute solution as soon as you move your stick.

Your outmatched, no shame in that...

Use notching while keeping them on your radar limit till amraam goes pitbull. While maintaining lock, you can change direction to the opposite site and shoot another missile. Their missile will bleed energy.

That's cranking, not notching :smilewink:

R27-ER are easily defeated with cranking when fired that far, if you stay fast. One or two reversal will bleed their energy and you will be in range for your Amraam. Don't panic and don't go full defensive when a missile i shot at you that far, especially a SARH one.

You could also notch and get back in quickly once their lock is dropped.

You have to develop your own tactics by a combination of crank/notch/pump. They've got the range, you have the ARH missiles, play to your strength

This video is a good intro to BVR tactics with the Viper:

Ah thank you, great vid.

I was getting nice and high but I wasn't going FAST! GS explains the importance of using the two together in the video to get max range on the AMRAAMs.

In addition to what the others have said: if you go 1v2 you should expect to be at a disadvantage, and need to play things accordingly

Also, in the current state, if you climb above 40000 ft your aim-120 has around 60 miles of maximum range. Do not trust the dynamic launch zone on the HUD, it is still WIP and is not accurate.

@Spirit X

I'd try three different approaches:

1- F-pole

2- Climb 40+k, stay supersonic, give them a couple lofting amraams from 30+nm, then go defensive (recommit as soon as you defeat their fox1s). The flankers won't press you if they have incoming fox3s.

3- Hide behind terrain, wait for the flankers to get closer, ambush them.

Always use tws in bvr and pop flares when you go defensive, in case there are ETs coming your way.

Thanks. I've been back to the mission using suggestion number 2 three times now and I won the engagement on all three occasions. Getting to 40k and at least mach 1.3 gives me a 60nm AMRAAM shot (as per the advice of Growling Sidewinder's video) and this makes all the difference. As you say, it means THEY are defensive rather than just me, which allows me to re-engage once the initial salvo of R-27s is dealt with.

I don't know what an 'F-pole' is but I'll look that up, cheers.

having some problems with TWS and SA

OK this has been bugging me for some time now...

while in TWS mode when establishing a bugged TGT as the range from the TGT decreases the RADAR range decreases automatically too and and I can't expand it back unless I unlock and manually dial it back up.

more over the SA mode in the HSD is always giving me all the details - allied flights friends and foes no matter if I set it to NOFR, FLON or so - this make the scope very cluttered...

any one got some tips on how to make Viper AA bit more sensible?
