Supercarrier cold start- What's going on?

An example of problems I have been having recently with DCS. I'm getting ridiculous frametimes in the supercarrier cold start mission in particular. The Hornet Ready On The Ramp runs fine.

Utilisations look ok. I often have a "1" in the power limit in HW monitor. Could this be my problem? Is this my PSU (650w) or GPU power?

Performance in SP generally is good@45 auto/100%SS/1PD however MP servers like Hoggit are usually terrible, particularly if there is cloud.

I seem to have FPS problems where others don't and I can't seem to get to the bottom of it.

Any ideas?

EDIT- I just tried a mates settings and had some interesting results with the same mission.

I turned shadows off and lowered AF to 2x. Terrain textures to high, View distance from low to extreme, and turned off driver holographic. Restarted Steam VR and have got a solid 45 on the same mission. I don't quite understand why the FPS is locked at 45 with the holographic off, but it's a good result.

From what I have noticed in my testing is that shadows on (any setting including low) absolutely kills frames on SC.

This is on a relatively decent system (GTX 1080, i7-9700k, SSD, Rift CV1).

Interestingly, without shadows, I'm able to retain 45fps with ASW on the SC cold start without issues while maximising other settings including MSAA.

However, as soon as shadows are on (even on low) performance drops to ~22 fps. This persists with almost all settings on low, including no SSAA and MSAA.

I conclude that something is definetly not right with how shadows are processed on the SC. I am able to maintain 45 with ASW normally while over cities with more objects present at one time (according to ED fps output).

Yeah, as soon as there is other fighters on deck, performance is quite poor 22fps. With clean SC I have solid 40fps (using medium Shadows)

I turned off motion projection. Found the frames were ok but the performance jittery. I’ve moved on from that now and I’m currently testing a new, equally useless selection of settings in this endless pursuit towards actually enjoying DCS again. Frustrating.

I tried your settings with reprojection off, restarted Steam VR, enabled motion smoothing and I get a variable framerate with jittery tracking. No reprojection at all in game.

Any idea what the differences are between the two reprojection modes Steam VR and WMR?

SteamVR has special mode that simply locks your fps to 45. WMR motionvectors reprojection tries to guess what next frame will look like based on previous frames. With motionvectors reprojection enabled game looks much smoother but you can see some artifacts and ghosting. So it works the same as SteamVR Motion Smoothing and Oculus ASW.

Long story short on WMR headsets always enable motionvector reprojection if you are not getting stable 90 fps in game (and in DCS you never get 90 fps).

functionally none, if you play a single game.

If you play more than one it offers you flexibility as you can turn on motion reprojection per game.

As you found out, you have to disable motion reprojection in defaultvr.settings by removing or commenting out the line on motion reprojection.

once that is done it hands over to steam.

in steam you have the same three options but now also available per-game but it is called motion smoothing, you can also set a global setting, like you can in default.vrsettings.

STEAM defaultvr.settings

Enabled = Auto

Disabled = Disabled

Force Always-on = MotionVector

a lot of people fail to understand that the WMR settings will override this, and erroneously, think that setting something in defaultvr.settings will "help" in some way, either remove the line that starts "motionReprojectionMode" , or comment it out by placing a double // in front of it
