shu77 Posted May 29, 2020 Posted May 29, 2020 So this doesn't seem to have a use at the moment. Does anyone know why? I saw a suggestion its not used IRL in the hornet, is it because its hard to press or is there something unimplemented/un-adopted that it was designed for (AIM-54 perhaps) Hornet, Super Carrier, Warthog & (II), Mustang, Spitfire, Albatross, Sabre, Combined Arms, FC3, Nevada, Gulf, Normandy, Syria AH-6J i9 10900K @ 5.0GHz, Gigabyte Z490 Vision G, Cooler Master ML120L, Gigabyte RTX3080 OC Gaming 10Gb, 64GB RAM, Reverb G2 @ 2480x2428, TM Warthog, Saitek pedals & throttle, DIY collective, TrackIR4, Cougar MFDs, vx3276-2k Combat Wombat's Airfield & Enroute Maps and Planning Tools

Reproduction sticks use readily available (less expensive) 4 and 5 way switches to keep costs down. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
QuiGon Posted May 29, 2020 Posted May 29, 2020 Switch doesn’t physically move left on the real stick I didn't know that! I always thought it did move left and just doesn't have a function assigned to it which I found odd. Now it makes more sense, thanks! Intel i7-12700K @ 8x5GHz+4x3.8GHz + 32 GB DDR5 RAM + Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 (8 GB VRAM) + M.2 SSD + Windows 10 64Bit DCS Panavia Tornado (IDS) really needs to be a thing!
kengou Posted May 29, 2020 Posted May 29, 2020 I have the Thrustmaster Hornet stick and while the weapon hat does move left, it's pretty awkward to do, and I don't map that direction on hardly any aircraft I fly because of it. Bunny Clark Posted May 29, 2020 Posted May 29, 2020 Originally it was only a 3-position switch: forward, down, and aft. The right command was added with AMRAAM integration. I imagine if there's ever a need for a 5th option cycling left, the switch will be redesigned since, as kengou mentioned above, it's pretty awkward to try to push left right now. Though, at this point, if a new air to air weapon is added to USN Hornets I'd guess it'll just replace Sparrow on the forward selector. Oil In The Water Hornet Campaign. Bunny Clark Posted June 1, 2020 Posted June 1, 2020 You sure won't lose anything doing that. Anything will be better than a 7. I like using AIM-7s in DCS, they're pretty great within about 6 to 10 miles. And there's something really satisfying about watching that smoke trail arch out and swat someone out of the sky that you don't get with an AMRAAM. But, at this point IRL, the Navy doesn't deploy with Sparrows anymore as far as I know. If/when the Super Hornet gets JATM my guess is that it'll be selected with Weapon Select forward rather than adding a left command for it. Oil In The Water Hornet Campaign. flywaldair (Skynet dev.) Posted June 1, 2020 Posted June 1, 2020 It does move left according to this post, however it has no assigned function in the real jet: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=199095 Skynet: an Integrated Air Defence System for DCS. Every time I use one in one of the SP missions where they are preloaded, I just hate sitting there keeping the target plane locked up while waiting for the dang thing to hit. I feel like I have a target on my back. One of the missions has us taking on I think it's 6 Migs. I sometimes launch a bunch of 7s for the heck of it and they never hit anything. Can you give a few more details on how you launch and aim them please?

They lose energy very quickly and if you lose lock the missile's gone. In my experience they works best just outside the max range of a Sidewinder. If you're flying against the AI the best tactic IMHO is to avoid enemy missiles until you get close enough. In other words don't think of them as a slightly worse AMRAAM but rather as a semi active slightly longer range Sidewinder.
