Svandamme76 Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 As the title says.. I'm getting shot up with heat seekers when my engines are cold. That doesn't make any sense at all.. I'm not talking idle I'm talking engines not running & cold as can be... Is engine state at all modeled in DCS? GGG Gunit : Any Time Baby !
BlackPixxel Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 There are two states, afterburner on or off. So even on the ground with a fresh plane without an engine running you can be tracked by heaters in DCS. Very primitive modelling.
Svandamme76 Posted June 20, 2020 Author Posted June 20, 2020 would be nice to have at least engine completely off modeled.. It opens up a lot of new tactics as done in AIMVAL real world Aim9 Lima testing GGG Gunit : Any Time Baby !
twistking Posted June 20, 2020 Posted June 20, 2020 did you test with rear-aspect missiles? maybe i'm wrong, but a modern all-aspect missile like aim-9L and newer should theoretically be able to lock onto a cold jet, shouldn't it? My improved* wishlist after a decade with DCS *now with 17% more wishes compared to the original
razo+r Posted June 20, 2020 Posted June 20, 2020 did you test with rear-aspect missiles? maybe i'm wrong, but a modern all-aspect missile like aim-9L and newer should theoretically be able to lock onto a cold jet, shouldn't it? If it has the same temperature (or a bit higher) than the ambient, I doubt that it can lock onto it.
G.J.S Posted June 21, 2020 Posted June 21, 2020 (edited) If AIM-9 are modelled correctly, then they can pick up airframe heating generated by air friction also, not just an exhaust plume. <—— My profile pic is of an F-4S viewed through an AIM-9 head, and as can be seen, it’s not just the plume that stands out. Air friction creates a trackable contrast against background ambient, although early ‘winders would not be as sensitive. falcon_120 Posted June 26, 2020 Posted June 26, 2020 The only thing to fix here as I see are planes on the ground that has not been "cold started" yet. So everything is turned off, hence no heat signature difference from the ground. Bear in mind that this not applies to an aircraft you have just turned off, since your engines and other system will take significant time to get completely cold.
