their behavior towards chaff as simplistic as in DCS

This right here. You can talk real world specifics until you're blue in the face, but DCS isn't even close to the real world when it comes to this (or anything really, it's all an approximation)

AMRAAM aren't magically Chaff proof, but unlike the Phoenix they can think ahead and search. The Phoenix relies on the AWG-9 burning through the Chaff until terminal phase. At which point its lower maneuverability and limited seeker scan means if you can lose it, you lose it. Once it doesn't see you, it's blind to the world, It's just less likely to not see you in the first place until real close, so in DCS the Chaff Coefficient number evens out 6 of one half dozen of the other when properly deployed.

I heard the opposite re its (C Variant)usefulness against fighter targets.

Edit: Here is Dave Baraneks take on it and he certainly would know , scroll down to the AWG9&Aim-54 combo question and its second to last paragraph.

I haven't followed all the Phoenix issues lately, but is the problem of Jester switching to RWS (repeatedly pressing his button) upon launching an AIM-54 being looked into?
