Mr_Burns Posted September 8, 2020 Posted September 8, 2020 I bought the latest Track-Ir many years ago (well I am on TIR5) and I always found it hit and miss, some times i even thought of reverting back to the HAT the TIR was so bad. Recently though its running like silk. I had a new monitor and desktop setup, seemed the IR camera may have this sweet spot where I could actually look behind me pretty consistently when dog fighting. Nothing has changed, then yesterday and today, its a jumpy temperamental disgrace, can look left awesome, cannot look right without it reverting to looking zoomed in at the floor of the cockpit. Reminded me of why I hate TrackIR so much. I am not interested in VR right now, cannot afford it, but why can (or does it) track your head so well that the expensive TIR cannot match? Is there anything you can add to TIR to improve the 360 tracking? I will calm down in a few hours but right now I feel like putting the fking thing in the microwave, was getting into a mission and it completely spazzed out.

gofrm76 Posted September 8, 2020 Posted September 8, 2020 Avoid any additional light sources or windows behind your back or better in the cameras field of view. From my experiences with my TIR4, the camera gets very easily distracted from additional light sources and does not recognize the lights/reflectors of the clip/hat anymore... Mango Posted September 8, 2020 Posted September 8, 2020 Something must be off in your setup or environment. I've used Track IR 2, 4 and 5 over 12 years and it's been nothing but mind-blowing. Have a look at what the camera "sees" in your TrackIR application and you should find the problem.
rob10 Posted September 8, 2020 Posted September 8, 2020 The 2 things that most often cause my TIR to lose it's mind are sunlight/reflections (including off shiny hardwood floor), and when it gets pulled out from it's proper "tucked in" position on my headphones -- in other words, partly flipped up as if you were planning to switch sides (this is the Pro version). If you're using the Pro version definitely make sure you have the camera offset toward the side you have the headset on.
randomTOTEN Posted September 8, 2020 Posted September 8, 2020 You really have to custom build your profile. It's not good enough to use a default one, or one you download from somebody else. Building your own profile teaches you about how TrackIR works, it's features, and it's limitations. If you don't make use of it's features correctly, and you do not respect it's limitations, you will have an enormous amount of frustration. An example: TrackIR works by observing the 3 reflections of the hat clip, or 3 LED's from the Pro clip, and translates them into a head position. If TrackIR see's 4-5 reflections because of background noise, you will have problems. If it sees 2 because the camera is positioned incorrectly, or the random profile you use requires you to move one of the reflectors out of the camera's view... you will have problems. If your profile forces you to block one reflector with another, TrackIR will also see only 2 reflectors, and the view will break. You really need to create a custom profile and learn the system.
Gruman Posted September 9, 2020 Posted September 9, 2020 I'm currently focusing on using my 2d monitor instead of sweating like an athlete in VR. So back to this TrackIR monopole. It simply blows my mind that there is still no valid alternative to TrackIR in 2020. Anything that elevates the tracking and reliability to "VR" Level. claw Posted September 9, 2020 Posted September 9, 2020 Some people report positive results from pulling a piece of fabric from a pantyhose taut over the camera. It reduces interference from background light/Ir reflections.
Gruman Posted September 9, 2020 Posted September 9, 2020 There is OpenTrack with EDtracker support. True, but only 3DOF (plus a tiny bit interpolation to fake the rest if you have the will to get through that OpenTrack Software) and there is a constant drift that needs to be corrected. ;) Intel I9 10900k @5.1GHz | MSI MEG Z490 Unify | Corsair Vengeance 64GB - 3600MHz | EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 VPC T-50 Base /w Viper & Hornet Grip | VPC Rotor TCS Pro w/ Hawk-60 Grip | TM TPR LG C2 42" | Reverb G2 | TIR 5 | PointCtrl | OpenKneeboard

Gruman Posted September 9, 2020 Posted September 9, 2020 There was actually a user here on the board who tried to get this going. Dont think he succeeded. [Edit] Found it. But I doubt it would help a lot, since the Worst Case Scenario would require both of the sensors providing accurate data. What would be a far more elegant solution would be the possibility to use multiple Sensors to cover more space (Similiar to a Vive Lighthouse / Rift CV1 way) and a more optimized TrackClip. Probably never going to happen because of this small market. :( Intel I9 10900k @5.1GHz | MSI MEG Z490 Unify | Corsair Vengeance 64GB - 3600MHz | EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 VPC T-50 Base /w Viper & Hornet Grip | VPC Rotor TCS Pro w/ Hawk-60 Grip | TM TPR LG C2 42" | Reverb G2 | TIR 5 | PointCtrl | OpenKneeboard
Kiezer Posted September 10, 2020 Posted September 10, 2020 (edited) Nothing has changed, then yesterday and today, its a jumpy temperamental disgrace, can look left awesome, cannot look right without it reverting to looking zoomed in at the floor of the cockpit. After getting back into DCS again and setting up track IR I was finding it going haywire - Changing the camera video processing mode from the default precision to standard seems to have helped. But as others have said, reflections can be a real nightmare especially if you are using the TrackClip (hat version), it pushed me to get the delanclip as it is almost impossible to find the trackClip Pro Here are my settings if you want a good starting point.
