Apologies if this is a duplicate question; I did search and couldn't find the answer.

 

So, I'm playing around with Case 3's in the FA18C and the F14B and I've been reading the decommisioned NATOPS manuals and noticed something about the Marshall radial that's very different to DCS and all the YouTubers, including the great Jabbers, who say something different.

 

 

It would seem that in the NATOPS manuals for the FA18C and T45 (the only two I've found) they both show that the marshalling radial is identical to the BRC of the ship, whereas the marshalling radial given in DCS is very definitely not.

 

What am I missing or have DCS got this wrong?

For a CV-1 approach, the primary marshal radial will be reciprocal to the final bearing (FB), not to the BRC, as the BRC doesn't have much use for CASE3. Occasionally you will marshal offset from the reciprocal, but the primary is FB+180.

 

Supercarrier for all its faults, does marshal you correctly for an ongoing CASE3 CV-1 event.

The far radial can be anything, preferring the FB-based one. The near radial is always the FB. I have heard that the direct marshal is reserved for airplanes in distress so normal recovery was some degrees offset. BRC-based I've been told is for training so the mental step of doing the offset adjustment is trained.

 

But since DCS apparently has one and only one marshal radial for all purposes it probably should be FB-based for simplicity and AI flow.

That's what I would have expected, and indeed have just flown in DCS.

However last week I flew one, and was given a radial that was 29deg from the BRC - so 19 from the FB that was much more in-line with Matts diagram and all the YouTube videos.

 

Has this changed in recent patches and I missed that line in the patch notes?

If there is some 'logic' in DCS as to when it will use FB and when it will add an adjustment angle to FB for the Marshall Stack, I wish this would be clearly communicated, because it's not in the Supercarrier manual, and non of the featured youtubers inc Wags, have mentioned it.

 

You can clearly see from Wags' drawing he expects it to be 30 deg off BRC, and today I flew it and it was 1 degree off.

Boat shouldn't be turning during recovery ops. Otherwise the xwind and wind over the deck will be screwy. And in either case, that's not what was happening in my actual attempts.

 

Some RL pilots reported that it's not that unusual to see ship turning during recovery ops.

 

About your first question: @G B reported that case 3 marshal stack irl is almost always offset. It doesn't really matter how large offset is, procedure is the same.

Do not expect fairness.

Boat wont be turning during the launches or recoveries, but seeing as you will be arriving in the marshal before the event starts, its not unreasonable to think that the boat might be turning between the 50NM marshal check in, and the beginning of the launches maybe 10-20mins later.

1). The marshal radial is almost always offset from reciprocal of final bearing. Usually around 30 degrees. I have never seen it exactly overlay on top of the FB, as you see in DCS.

 

2) The ship usually does not turn during the actual recovery. There are rare exceptions. However, the ship can turn while airplanes are marshaling, and even after they commence, until the first aircraft is on the final bearing.
