It's gimbal lock. The TGP turret has a spot through which it cannot turn, because of how it is designed. That spot is right on your nose, not a problem when dropping LGBs, but when self-lasing APKWS, it's common. If the TGP has to deal with that spot, it'll have to rotate around it, and it won't always reacquire the original target, especially in point track. You need to keep your target below that spot at all times.

If you wonder why is that, imagine a telescope on a stand. You can turn it around, but if you wanted to look at something directly overhead, you can't, because the stand is in the way. That's exactly the same problem.

another example, I like hidden goals in the woods, and that's why this is a real problem for me...

It doesn't have to be.

For gun runs, you always want to be visual on the target with your Mk1 eyeballs. The TGP is an awesome tool to sort targets from 10 miles out, but as you get closer, you should really look out the window and identify the target visually. In this situation the TGP together with the HMCS is a huge help. But now that you can see the target, forget the TGP, forget the TGP diamond in the HUD and forget the MFCDs. For a gun run you would do it the same in an A-10A and in an A-10C (I don't like to call it the A-10C II because that's just a DCSism).

And then there's another thing that can help. As far as I know pilots won't normally come straight at the target and just put the nose down as they come in range. Instead they'll always fly offset from the target, and turn into it so they get a very short final leg. Pull nose on target with the desired dive angle, roll out, stabilize, refine aim, fire, come off target. The likelihood of the TGP running into these gimbal problems is fairly minimal then.

The biggest problem for me is self-lasing APKWS, like Dragon1-1 just mentioned, because aiming the rockets tends to go right into that dead spot for the TGP. Takes a bit of finesse to avoid the problem then. And once again, having a markpoint right on the target and the markpoint selected as the steerpoint means you can always slew the TGP back on target with a single China Hat Aft Long.

Maybe the air to air training needs to be fixed, because it wants you to 'boresight' the tgp using china hat short aft but it just sets it to lss
