BTW, why didn't the UAV operator zoom better on that airplane?

A few posts ago, =4c=Hajduk Veljko asked a sensible question. So to get the thread back on track as it has got kinda political....

My answer would be:-

First imagine yourself flying a Lockon mission. If you are anything like myself, 10 mins into the mission, everything esle has dissapeared. You ARE 100% in that Cockpit and when that SAM or AAA comes up at you, you are breathing hard and slightly freaked out!

Now imagine you are the UAV operator, you are actually flying a real aircraft. I'm sure the feeling of it being your skinny @ss in it is even more real than Lockon. Now imagine you see that MiG coming your way. You are pumped up and yelling for your boss to "come look at this!!".

Now you see the missile launch!! AAAAARGH!!! I'M GONNA DIE!!!!!

Then the screen goes blank and you realise you are still alive. You also discover that adrenalin is actually warm, brown and you are sitting in some....

I'm amazed he even had the thought or reflexes to zoom in on the missile, I doubt I would've.

The R-73 has a 7700N engine, however, the burn time or specific impulse is never stated :(

My data says the R-73 has 7700 kgfs total impulse, with "4.1-6.8 s" burn time.

amazing!! What I don't get is why the pilot lunched the missile in a angle where it needed to turn slightly, Maby to the fact that he was pretty close, But I wouldn't take that risk. Would be safer to lunch in straight on. For sake off the PVOs reputation.

Maybe the pilot went for a visual pass to make sure it's a drone... once in close flyby he confimes it's recon drone, turns on the target and fires. I doubt they would fire missiles at an aircraft with humans in it (be it military plane or civilian) as that could very likely triger war.

That drone wasn't fast (check 330 km/h speed bar in the left hand part of the footage) so "MiG" was almost idling! No need for high RPM!

You will look attentively what pilona a rocket starts from! Looking repeatedly vidio, see that a rocket goes down from an edge covered, pilonov on verge of (butt end) wing at MIG-29 was not present, only at SU-27

I suggest looking at the moment the aircraft enters the picture. Look for the presence or lack of:

Wingtip pylons

Tail Boom

Flanker, anyone? Also, Russia operated FLankers from Gudauta before - one was shot down by an SA-2.

Wow, cool pictures Groove! Nice find.

To summarize:

  1. missile appears to be launched from wingtip
  2. nose cone appears to be white
  3. tail fins appear to be perpendicular to fuselage

wow, guys wonderfull work, so it is a SU-27 .. great news, .. i can't see how i didn't noticed it before??

anyone here an expert on radars and maybe we could explore the idea from where it came from.. ? If we take Georgia to be "correct" in their statement that it must be a Russian aircrat, but since they got it wrong from the start -Mig-29?- i don't know what to believe anymore, ..

is it possible that professionals like georgia military man know less than we(lomac fans) do at recognizing aircrafts or was there a motive to say this was a Mig-29? ..

It doesn't matter why they didn't identify it well. Both aircraft look similar especially at a distance, and it tooks us a bit of work to make sure it was one and not the other. For Georgia, it doesn't matter if its MiG-29 or Su-27 so long as its Russian.

I don't see why Georgia would fake the radar trace - Russia operated Su-27's from there before. One was even shot down by an SA-2.
