I hate to chew up more space with this topic, but man, I'm struggling.

I spent about 30 min yesterday testing various ways to employ the Rockeye family (CBU-99 & Mk-20) successfully, mainly against trucks. On the Nevada map, I dropped CCIP in singles, pairs, from various burst heights (900, 1200, 1500, 2200, etc) and scored maybe 2 kills over about 30 bombs dropped. The drops were on the money from about a 30 degree dive each time, usually from about 7k AGL.

The dispersion pattern was consistently really tight (way too tight) and there was basically no use in trying to use the Rockeye. Am I the only one getting these results? Am I missing something?

Other than that really enjoying the Hornet. Seems like the HARM is finally to the point where it works pretty effectively, and I'm even getting a decent carrier landing here and there (hey, even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then).

Im no Rockeye-King in any way but as far as I know burst height is set on the canisters by the ground crew and in DCS at the moment only 1500 is simulated. So you should always set 1500 on the stores page. So far all is well, after that I dont really know how it works, as far as I know there is a timer that starts when you release the canisters so in order to get a specific pattern you must release them at a very correct altitude. There is not so much info on this in the DCS Hornet manual. But I may have got it all or some wrong.

I use the the MK20 quite often and have allot of success with them. I find that a 20 degree dive is more effective in DCS. This gives the dispersal pattern more of an oval shape and is more likely to cover target. The kills don't come right away, especially with tanks. Let them "burn" awhile before making another pass. They will usually explode after 30 sec or so.

I agree with the above tips. 20-25 degree dive with speed above 400 knots does any single target a doable death. The softer the target and closer, the more probability to get multiple kills with one rock.

In a side note, the other day I had AI -2 loaded with rockeyes as well for SEAD practice. Funny thing is when I released a single rockeye, it does the standard tight oval dispersion. But when -2 attacks, the rockeye dispersion was HUGE! It looked like he dropped all 4 in one pass, but he made several passes with rockeyes after, which to my elementary math says that doesn’t make sense. Any ideas?

I'm not sure as I've been away for a few weeks but since the last update A2G is useless. AUTO, FD, CCIP and MAN modes are so screwed up that pickling off any ordnance misses the targets completely. It's like the weapons is still DUD. Using CCIP mode I can put the Piper right on the target pickle and what it completely miss the target. In Auto as well. Seems like the CCIP and fall line completely drift off as I near the target.

Anyone else seeing this behavior?

Did your wingman drop them straight and level? That'll spread the dispersion out far more than dropping in a dive.

This I am not sure. All I know is -2 was in trail and then give him weapons free. I roll in for attack, drop one rockeye for a dual kill. Escape by circling climb for effects. Hear -2 say bombs away. See my kills. Then a carpet of bomblets way bigger/wider than what I did. I then roll out and fly away. The go to F2 view of -2 to see what the hell he dropped. He still had two rockeyes left. Wut?

I always use CCIP for rocks. I don’t really like AUTO that much because it more time consuming for using it with them. However, I haven’t seen any accuracy problems with CCIP. How bad are you missing? Is it like tenths of a mile or less? Drifting? Sometimes winds can be very brutal and it will look like there is a problem.

I use ccip as well mostly. Honestly I don’t know what it is. There is no wind as weather is set to standard default. Thats why I was testing all delivery modes and getting the same results. The results are tested in two separate missions and different theatres.

Ah I see. Hmm, I don’t know. I don’t really use 82 or 84s because they are inherently inaccurate. Rocks with the cluster seems to make up for that a bit in their coverage. But my experience with them have been mostly positive. Usually when I don’t get results is when I deliver outside the 20-30 degree dive, +400 knot profile.

Hey Eagle thanks for the replies. I found the culprit. I've been so use to selecting the jet into NAV after the INS would fast slave on STO HDG. After the the OK I selected IFA instead on NAV and all worked as it should.

POS/AINS (GPS aided INS) position keeping mode has been introduced. If GPS is available, once alignment is complete, the INS switch should be moved to and kept in the IFA position as per the normal startup checklist. This enables POS/AINS mode which can be verified in the top left corner in the HSI. In POS/AINS mode, GPS is used in conjunction with INS to provide the position of the aircraft. If GPS is not available, the INS switch should be moved to and kept in the NAV position.

These two Fixed the problem in the last update so it's acting as it should now.

  • INS GND alignment never finishes if GPS is not available - Fixed
  • INS alignment status display in HSI indicates 0.5 OK but INS alignment is not ready - Fixed

Doing 20 and 30 degrees attacks now accurate.

Oh great news! I’m glad you got it sorted. That would make sense if the accuracy of the jet wasn’t tight, yeah it can throw off the releases as well. Good job!
