nscode Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 This is the movie "Flight to death", about Milenko Pavlovic, commander of Yugoslav fighter air force (204th). He died defending his home town of Valjevo. He dragged a younger pilot out of the aircraft and took off. Few minutes before being hit he lost the generators. This meant that all the aircraft was good for is 15 minutes of battery power ,only for essential instruments for RTB. However, he pressed on. It is thought that he sacrificed him self, so that no further pilots would be lost. A mechanic talks about what was the procedure for extending aircraft resources during the time of sanctions. The command simply issues a statement proclaiming that the resources are now extended. No testing, no repair. Some repairs that were done were achieved by cannibalizing some planes to make others work. A pilot says: at that time, to us, it would be the same if we were attacked by Martians. The technological gap was already so huge, that it would not matter if it was any bigger. Even the way they've used us was wrong. (Planes were being sent one by one, or just one pair at the time. The pilots often suggested that one decisive sweep should be mounted, giving at least some chance of success) There was no coordination between the SAM units and the fighters, no way that they could drive one target away from the others, so we could engage it. In fact, we were often shot at by our own air defenses. I don't blame the SAM operators. They were simply told to shoot at anything thats in the air. It should be noted that at the time this was filmed all the 29s were still grounded, in need of repair (5 should have been repaired by the begging of the year, but only one is air worthy at this moment), and that is why MiG-21 is used in the reenactment. There were no combat MiG-21 flights during the war. An order was once received to arm the 21s with AA missiles, but quickly withdrawn. The 29 cockpit shots you can see is Milenko Pavlovic at an air show in '98. Two boys you can see are his sons. The one without hare lost it after hearing of his father's death. 2 Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.

Vekkinho Posted May 8, 2008 Author Posted May 8, 2008 What's also worth mentioning is a fact that Milenko Pavlovic scrambled from Batajnica AB (near Pazova) while NATO planes kept egressing from the area indicating this sortie was totaly unneccessary and unreasonable at the given moment. He knew he couldn't do much up there, couldn't catch and engage any of the planes that were already headed back to Italy after the bomb run and flights like that are a pure nonsence but government and brass kept pushing pilots into combat, asking for more resistance without making proper strategy! Milenko Pavlovic was commanding officer of 204 Sqn. He could send someone of inferior staff up in the air that day but he couldn't have lived with it later. On contrary, he stopped his comrade from taking off in that #109 by parking his car in front of the airplane, dragged him out from the cockpit and took off. He was tasked to intercept a group of NATO planes egressing west to BiH over city of Tuzla, planes that engaged a factory in his hometown Valjevo. Radar operators say the radar screen looked horrifing (100+ Blue vs single Red). Like NSCode already said, resources were extended in that stupid fashion 'cause army had to seem strong in the eyes of the people it's supposed to protect but of proper maintenance we could talk in past tense. MiGs that ex-Yu had were introduced in 1987/88 but the ONLY overhaul happened in early 1991 in ZMAJ - Velika Gorica near Zagreb along Iraqi Fishbeds and Floggers that flew in for repair just before Desert Storm began. Shortly after that a war broke out in these regions too and maintenance was neglected. Even Milenko's anti G suit was torn apart and not functional! Milenko's father told that his son would never leave his plane (eject) in combat. He was hit by AIM-120 fired from Dutch flight of F-16 flying OCA over Serbian/Bosnian border. First AMRAAM was a direct hit, breaking the nose and cockpit away from the fuselage. Second AMRAAM ripped entire fuselage to toothpicks. It's belived Milenko died after the first hit. It was also mentioned that Serbian citizens were celebrating the downing of the plane when they saw a flaming wreck overhead, at first majority thought it's a NATO bird because noone believed there'd be someone to oppose them! Last few shots of Milenko's mother are IMO, the most valuable scenes of entire documentary. When she was told that NATO plane was downed over Valjevo she began crying momentarily. People told her she should not worry about it 'cause it's a NATO plane but she answered: "In that plane was someone's son, no matter of nationality, race or religion, someone's son just like mine". Imagine how she felt when she found out the truth! P.S. NSCode, can U look for a hi res version of LET U SMRT, I'd like to add english subtitles! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Pilotasso Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 This reminds me of my own contry history 30+ years ago. Men doing crazy bravery but for the wrong reasons, reasons wich were imposed by the politicians onto those who would pay for their decisions. Milenko Pavlovic saved that young pilots life but all that could have been avoided. Its tragic in the double sense. .

Maximus_G Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Мужики, если можете, залейте пожалуйста фильм на http://ifolder.ru/ например. Там хоть можно это реально скачать, и есть докачка и торрент. Guys, if you can, please upload the file to some other service, allowing to resume interrupted download. http://ifolder.ru/ for example. At least it can produce a torrent-file for download.
nscode Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 The ifolder.ru seems interesting. But I can't find the max allowed file size Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
