RTX3060Ti 8GB has been launched - great value for 1440P

Recommended Posts

This is just a heads up on the RTX 3060Ti 8GB, launched today (2nd December 2020).

With the higher end GPUs launches (aimed at 4K and VR gaming) and all the recent curfuffle surrounding them, there hasn't been much attention to the more affordable mid and mid-high segment GPUs (sub 450,00 USD prices). These are aimed at (2D) 1440P gaming, as well as 1080P at very high framerates.

Therefore, among the best selling GPUs for a much, much larger audience, which should also include the majority of those playing DCS World.

Without any new solutions on this segment for a year and a half, Nvidia is now the first to bring the new generation, with the RTX 3060Ti 8GB.

In rough terms, the RTX 3060Ti performance is slightly above the RTX 2080 SUPER and often close to the RTX 2080Ti, but at far more affordable prices and far less power consumption. As to say, untill we know how good the rumoured AMD RX 6700XT 12GB really is (expected to be its main rival), the RTX 3060Ti is now the best solution at around 400,00 USD/EUR/GBP.

Those of you looking to upgrade from ageing GPUs like Nvidia Maxwell (GTX970, GTX980, GTX980Ti) and Pascal (GTX1060, GTX1070, GTX1080), or ageing AMD equivalents (RX480, RX570, RX580, Vega 56), the RTX 3060Ti may be the kind of upgrade that you've been waiting for.

Let's just hope that both product availability and the $399 price (MSRP) are not a fantasy.

Good upgrade for those still on 2d monitors, however I would not recommend it for VR, at least not for DCS: World.

Specs: Win10, i5-13600KF, 32GB DDR4 RAM 3200XMP, 1 TB M2 NVMe SSD, KFA2 RTX3090, VR G2 Headset, Warthog Throttle+Saitek Pedals+MSFFB2  Joystick.

While it would be just enough to chug on 8GB for DCS as well, not counting VR, it's not exactly safe way to go long-term wise. Remember, those reviewers are heavily biased toward testing mainstream games and would barely touch a simulator, due to the civilian flight sim hype they probably did touch it this year, for other reasons that made flight sims huge this year and stand out big time compared to anytime before, but that's where their interest ends unfortunately.

I was very happy with AMD perhaps thinking what I was thinking, to not forget other VRAM use cases besides the repetitious buzz about "1080p free to play gaming", or they had some other reasons too, to go 2x or +100% straigh to 16GB  and not rely on the prospects of fast SSDs + DirectStorage thinking the fast SSD-to-VRAM upload is going to stream all that removing the need for more VRAM. Not necessairly, you still need to have thigns in VRAM to do a lot of other things efficiently. DirectStorage isn't even released for developers yet ... not only this takes HW/SW/API support, it also takes implementing with games and desiging the memory management around it, in the end it may be the optimal solution that keeps memory sizes from ballooning and would be something DCS would benefit, but in the meantime it's far far easier to just avoid the complexity and go bigger and let DCS or otherwise just use it if they need.

Also today is 2nd December, not 12th 😉

oops, correcting RTX 3060Ti launch date (2nd of December 2020) in OT. 🤐

And yes, I agree. For the longer term DCS usage, it's definitely better to get a GPU with more than 8GB of VRAM.

The problem is, there's nothing below $600 with more than 8GB of VRAM and, price/performance ratio wise, this RTX3060Ti seems to be as good as it gets.

If and when the AMD RX6700 and RX6700XT 12GB are confirmed and launched, those'll be the ones to go for instead.

That appears to be filling the price point at which the 2070S previously was, but with around a 10% improvement.
Good to see real progress!

Since the RTX 3080 are already sellig at around 1000€ (in Germany) i highly doubt the prices will hit the MSRP in the next couple month.

Even the RTX 3070 are 630€ to 700€.

Dont buy if the price is higher than 400$. It should be closer to 300. Also Im and getting more than 8GB usage in DCS at 1440P.

Holiday season is a horrible time for new builds for both stock and price. The news about shortages have been quite frequent lately but I have been building since the 90's and I always had trouble at this time.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi,
just a small feedback regarding Rtx 3060ti that I received today
it costed me a bit less than 500€ (and that's not bad for Europe)
Attached to a Intel I5 10600k, 16gb ram and Lenovo explorer WMR (1440x1440 per eye)

A quick benchmark

-------------------------

Textures med
Terrain Texture low
Civ off
Water med
Vis range med
Shadows low
Res cockpit displ 1024
Antistrophic 8x
Terrain shadows off

Vr ss (in game ) 1.0
steam ss 150% (1872x1872)

Default supercarrier mission - Case I with F18

--------------------------

if you enable reprojection its 45 always

without reprojection

fpsVR shows 90fps locked in flight
on the deck when crew is moving around the fps is around 50-70, but I can actually see CPU struggling

vram 5.8gb
ram 12.0gb

I am really happy, especially since I have been flying on low without shadows with Radeon R9 390, with 30fps

If you need some specific benchmark with some other module let me know.

AMD FX 8350 4.0Ghz, 16gb DDR3, MSI R9 390, MS FF2 & CH Throttle PRO, track IR 4 & Lenovo Explorer VMR
