RIM-66 too fast?

Hello,

from the sources I could find on the internet RIM-66 should be a 3.5 Mach missile, but in DCS it manages nearly 5 Mach. Would be great to know if this is a bug.

If by 'sources' you mean wikipedia, that doesn't really mean much.

 

Raytheon reports it as a >3M missile in the brochure, so saying mach 3 isn't necessarily unfair since you'd think the brochure would say >4M if that was the case 

 

To answer your question, I doubt that it's bug.  It's more like a DCSism to make the ranges work out using the old FM.

Plus there is a new RIM-66M and RIM-67 in the works (though probably just a graphical update). 

 

I guess we can all hope and dream that someday all missiles will have updated flight and guidance models.

Maybe I am missing something obvious, but in my book something that should fly around 3.5M should fly around 3.5M and not +/- 1.5M.

What kind of explanation is: well to make sure it has range, we decided to add some extra mach to it?
Now what type of RIM-66 is being launched here, unfortunately I can't tell as TavView only depicts it as RIM-66.

The only thing you're missing is a DCS-ism to give the missile a more appropriate range, whereas ideally it would have a FDM rework.

 

As for the variant, that's actually difficult to answer because the same RIM-66 is used on both the OHP frigate and Aegis ships, whereas AFAIK they should be different variants (the OHP should be firing the SM-1). It's one of the reasons why full-names should be given, where possible, in the unit listing.

 

I'm fairly sure that the SM-1MR is for pre-Aegis ships (like the OHP and Spruance etc) and SM-2 for Aegis equipped stuff. 

 

The Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate should probably be using the RIM-66E SM-1MR (given that the Oliver Hazard Perry-class is depicted as a 1999+ ship, given that it has Phalanx Block 1B). The Ticonderoga-class should be using the RIM-66C right up to the RIM-66M.

 

The new missile we're getting is supposedly the RIM-66M but not many details have been shared.

One thing I forgot to mention about the OHP as it appears in DCS World; the STIR (Separate Target Illumination RADAR) for the Mk92 FCS is completely absent; this RADAR is required for terminal guidance for the RIM-66, as it's the RADAR that provides the CW illumination.
