Since I am ridding myself of this plastic piece of garbage, I would like to know if this is any better. I would like to stay 64bit since I have all this ram I would like to continue using.

The only way you could use 8GB today would be if you had finite element software. Theres nothing in existence that will use that amount of RAM today anyway.

I have 4GB and the 3.25GB detected is just perfect for me. Not only that but the vast majority of the apps wont use more than 1.5GB. The only one that does for me is Supreme Commander RTS and then I had to use a tool and edit system files in order to enable it to access additional RAM past that limit.

Hi Hitman, XP pro 64bit can address up to 128GB of RAM. So you wont have an issue with your 8 gig setup in that respect.

Its currently as stable as the 32 bit XP home/Pro and i'm planning to switch to this as well as i've heard that a properly configured XP 64 setup will give quite a performance gain over 32 bit XP.

You might be aware of this but just incase Intel chipset motherboards require the Memory remap feature to be enabled through the BIOS if your running on a 64 bit OS as it allows mapping of the PCI/PCIe memory above the physical RAM, its usually found in the northbridge configuration menu.

This allows windows to cache physical and video RAM seperately and should see a decent boost in games performance as well.

I'm using Vista ultimate x64 with SP1 ATM and frankly i've found it as stable as an irrate taxi driver who's got stuck behind two old ladies in a skoda.:D

There is supposed to be an edit in the msconfig for 32 bit users that allow the option for windows to see the full 4gbs in windows. IIRC it is for both Xp and Vista 32 bit, but I havent seen it in Xp since Ive never looked for it. I havent had Xp in years. As far as that link explains, you have to edit a PAE into the boot.ini, but I have NO idea how to do that. You should be able to open it in notepad, but only in safe mode, look for PAE and enable it via "=true" I assume. Dont quote me on that.

Because several devices in the computer, including the videocard memory, are reserved in 32-bit OS's, starting at 4GB downwards, Windows XP, or Vista, or basically any Linux 32-bit flavour, will not show the complete 4GB as being available. Usually 3.x is recognized, depending on the exact hardware. That is not to say it's not advisable to install 4GB. Most 3GB configurations are not Dual-channel, and the ones which are (2x 512MB + 2x 1GB) mostly have higher latencies because there are 4 sticks, and not the same size either.

The edit you are referring to is I think the /PAE switch when booting windows: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms791485.aspx

Windows XP 32-bit can give one application maximum 2GB memory. So having more then 2GB memory means that Windows can assign the full 2GB to the main app running, whilst having enough memory left for the processes in the background.

Because of WoW (Windows on Windows, not World of Warcraft), almost any 32-bit software will run on the 64-bit versions of Windows, and the performance reported across the net differs from ~ -3% to 5% compared to native 32-bit. The biggest problem in practice with the 64-bit versions is the initial installation. Things like drivers, and IIRC virusscanners, need to be native 64-bit.
