Option for fixed/slow time of day

Sometimes it's really nice to be able to use the dawn and dusk times to get nice screenshots or vids, but these quickly end, and the lighting then sucks or isn't even there, would it be possible to have an option in the mission editor to freeze, or at least slow down the speed of the passage of time just for the environmental effects?

Regarding lighting ''not being there'' keep in mind the moon's phases. Pay attention to what date you select, for more light at night, make sure you choose a date with a full moon! Consult a calendar

 

On topic, they have that option in Arma, but I seriously doubt they'll do so in DCS, offhand due to the way triggers and units work, it would probably cause utter hell and necessitate a complete revamp of the way the whole system operates thereby breaking every mission ever made...

I don't see what that has to do with triggers or units, and it wouldn't neccessitate a complete revamp of anything.

 The bulk of how DCS handles that stuff is based on time of day. If you alter the flow of time, you need to alter how DCS perceives events and provide additional methods of scheduling said events. Doing that will likely require, at the very least, repackaging missions. Doing that for an engine overhaul is one thing, doing it for some off the wall ''feature'' unlikely to see much usage is something else.

No, the bulk of how it handles stuff is time since start of mission, not time of day, you can change the time of day of missions after you've created them and it has no impact at all on triggers.
