A/A TACAN question

I'm sure the answer is obvious, but I am confused by A/A TACAN.

 

For example, in Mission 2 of the Raven One campaign, I can see the tanker TACAN on the HSI with the symbol, range and bearing.  When I punch in my wingman's TACAN, I only get range, and the bearing compass just keeps rotating round the rose.

 

Why is this?

Fighter to fighter you won't get bearing, only distance.

Also for yardstick to work properly, wingman shoud set TACAN channel +63 of FL.

Looking into this a bit, is it that because smaller aircraft aren't able to carry the bulky equipment necessary to give bearing?

 

On the yardstick thing, in the Raven Mission 2, my wingman is stated as TACAN 55X and that seems to give a signal OK, so I'm not sure about how that fits in with the +63 thing.

But we get distance ok. It’s bearing that we don’t get.

Ground based TACAN in DCS use X band. Perhaps you received a ground based TACAN instead of your wingman?

 

If not, there still exist the possibility that ED did not model the AI TACAN the same like the player TACAN...

Sorry, my mistake, it was the tanker on 55X, my wingman is 76X and I am 13X, so that makes sense now.
