DST Posted April 18, 2021 Posted April 18, 2021 VR pilot here. Sorry, I cannot agree to you all saying that it looks so much netter now - just switched back to stable and just sitting on the carrier and looking around, the water looks clearly WAY better than in 2.7 right now, there are waves and there is detail - i really do not hope this degradation is intended. Even with wind added the water surface looks dull and flat and the way the new clouds reflect on the water surface like on some giant polished mirror looks unnatural. And when changing the details in option menu makes no difference I would think there is definitely something wrong. 2 I7 8700K 3.7 GHz 32GB RAM NVIDIA RTX 3080 Rift S

Just increase surface wind to have some more waves, it is miles ahead to what we had before. I agree and especially on The Channel, the water used to look clear and more tropical. Now it looks like the real Channel waters, grey and more opaque. SLAVA UKRAINI MoBo - ASUS 990FX R2 Sabertooth, CPU - AMD FX 9590 @4.7Gb. Sharkku Posted April 19, 2021 Posted April 19, 2021 It seems to me that there are two camps here. One that says water looks much better than before, and one that says it looks much worse. It also seems to me that those in the former are on flat screens, and those in the latter camp are the ones using VR. I think there is something fishy going on with VR settings, both for clouds and water. On flatscreens it looks fine, but in VR either quality settings are not taking effect, or the rendering is simply just wrong. I'm using VR myself, and water and clouds look very disappointing in 2.7. But in 2D videos both water and clouds look amazing. 2
netizensmith Posted April 19, 2021 Posted April 19, 2021 From a gameplay perspective it’s worse in both 2d and vr. Driven my harrier into the sea a few times in both modes since 2.7. I can’t say whether it’s more realistic or not now but it does make life more difficult!
Ala12Rv-watermanpc Posted April 19, 2021 Posted April 19, 2021 (edited) The "problem" now with the water is that a huge physical effect is still missing: Sun light dispersion due to waves. This makes for a too dark and flat water's surface in most situations, I mean, water will be difficult to distinguish from the sky in a fighter aircraft in combat most of the time (as per real fighter pilots), specially when looking the side where the light is impacting. However, when looking to the backlight side, and unless sun is very high in the sky (pretty much on top of the vertical), there will be a HUGE "milky" sun light reflection area up to the horizon that will contribute to discern water from sky and height, the higher the more spread the sun shine will be and more affected by the atmosphere scattering tinting it with a nice golden color. Here is a little example video showing how difficult it is to distinguish water from sky when in a dogfight and at the same time the missing FULL sun light effect over the water in DCS: Note how that satinated sun shine is 90% missing at the moment in DCS. Some shots showing this effect too: From extreme altitude: Edited April 19, 2021 by Ala12Rv-watermanpc Take a look at my MODS here
