Bad quality vid (Fullscreen), but it seems that the front deltas turn

opposing directions for rolls.

A lot of rolls from cockpit view. Then, there's no evidence the canards help for roll.

 

What is almost sure : all half-elevons work together, from pitch to roll. Excepted for hard braking, where internals elevons rotate up while canards rotate down.

Yeah this BAS 90 concept dates way back with the Swedish airforce, so if we look here:

 

we'd see what a thrust reverser thing is good for.

 

Unlike the Viggen, the Gripen does not have a thrust reverser. The canard foreplanes can be tilted almost 90 degrees to act as airbrakes on landing. There are carbon brakes on all the wheels of the tricycle landing gear to reduce landing roll. Interestingly, pilots using the Gripen flight simulators have performed simulated carrier landings, without an arresting hook; it seems a bit unlikely that this will ever be done in practice, though no doubt some Gripen pilots would give it a shot if they got the chance.!!! :doh: (I bet they play LOFC in the free time too!)

 

Swedish defense plans include a concept known as "BAS 90", which envisions dispersal of aircraft in groups of four to six to "road bases" organized around specially reinforced lengths of highway, with associated dispersal areas. This scheme dictates the Gripen's short-field capabilities. The Gripen can take off and land in less than 600 meters (2,000 feet). Once deployed to a road base, the Gripens are serviced by a ground crew of six, including one highly trained specialist and five minimally trained conscripts. A service team can refuel and rearm a Gripen in ten minutes. The Gripen features an auxiliary power unit (APU) to reduce its dependence on ground systems, and the fighter's onboard digital systems include "built-in self-test" capabilities that can download diagnostic data to a tech's laptop computer. Service doors to critical systems are at head level or lower, allowing easy access by technicians. Flygvapnet experience shows that the Gripen requires 40% less maintenance work-hours and only half the fuel of the Viggen.

BTW, the Viggen landing is very impressive ! :shocking: I should modelize one some day...

 

So, I'm looking for any picture or video showing Gripen with afterburner at night... :detective_2:

Aerobraking part of the landing roll in that video (01:40-01:45) is pretty short so as soon as nose wheel touches the ground pilot applies pitch down on the stick so canards act as dragbrakes!

 

AND also the nosewheels have brakes!

Would be cool if someone created that road base. It's possible to land on roads in LO? Kinda nice feature when makin movies :D

 

I've searched through all the Gripen pictures at airliners.net and there were not even ONE picture of gripen by night.

The closest I got was this one:

You can land on roads in Lock On. Same as F2. Sorry about crappy picture quality!

Wishlist Terrains - Bigger maps

Wishlist Modules - A variety of utility aircraft to better reflect the support role. E.g. Flying the Hornet ... big yawn ... flying a Caribou on a beer run to Singapore? Count me in. Extracting a Recon Patrol from a hastily prepared landing strip at a random 6 figure grid reference? Now yer talking!

Yeah, I already made a few missions where I placed some static objects in the map near straight parts of the roads to represent road bases or FARPs! Support vehicles, Igla guys, static helos, etc... IIRC, there's like 6 or 7 FARP spots in the LO map and that particular mission is kinda default one to start with, adding points, teams and planes later on to your liking!

 

But there's a downside, U can't refuel when you land on the road, in LO refuel possibility is present only at airbases!!!

Yeah possible, but bear in mind I didn't install Birdy's scenery mod 1.3 + Merzifon when I took these screenies. This Birdy's mod doubles the qty of trees when using high scenery in LOFC!

 

I have like 7 road bases placed throughout the map (4 in Crimea; 3 in Caucasus, IIRC). I'll go check ASAP if some of them are more hidden and post screenies back!

Actually, this is not true. The pilot doesn't touch anything. All the canards, the speed brakes and elevons movements are programmed into FCS and apply automatically upon landing. All the pilot HAS TO do is to step on the brakes. You can even do it while still in the air and the aircraft starts braking as soon as the nose wheel touches the ground.

And one more thing that needs to be added to be like an system 90 strip that sweden uses is the armement pockets or in swedish "klargöringsfikor" wich is like little tarmacs by the side of the road wich is like maybe 50 X 50 metres were they park, refuel and rearm the aircrafts. I dont live far from a closed down roade base. Maybe i should go there and take some pictures so you get a sence of what a real swedish base looks like. Making those pockets should be possible in 3ds max if there is a way to make them hard like the stock taxiways so you can actually park on them.

BTW off topic... Janko i can se in your picture that you are in småland. I can tell from teh colours of the bus stop sign so its not impossible that straight is were the road base is close to were i live, or maybe it´s eneryda rakan outside of Älmhult? did you take the picture and in that case do you know were it is?
