Loads of 'static' (but animated) P-35 BAR LOCK objects at airfields, but none placeable as EWR's in the editor.

Model is clearly already there in the sim - I'd have thought it just needs merging with the similar EWR code given to the P-19 and other existing assets?

Perhaps a 'golf ball' object that could be user configurable in the ME as to its range/power?  Or a few generic antenna shapes, also potentially user configurable.

Would go well with the IADS module 😏

I agree, there are many not-working radars in the map. For example the one on the Mount Olympus (Cyprus) looks very nice.
It would be great, If there is something similar like invicible heliport with an configuratebly radar (EWR) feature (like elevation of anthena, performance/range, repetitive frequency and broadcasting frequency and callsign).

I'm kinda dumbfounded by the lack of air defence RADARs in an aircraft focused combat simulator. We don't have a single BLUFOR EWR, and REDFOR only had the 80s 1L13 and 55G6 RADARs which are long overdue a major graphical overhaul.

And even as far as long range acquisition RADARs are concerned - the SA-2d doesn't have its more commonly associated acquisition/search RADAR, the P-18 ["Spoon Rest D"], and nothing for the WIP SA-5 either, which would be the P-14 ["Tall King C"]

As OP said, there is a P-37 ["Bar Lock"] RADAR that is present on the Caucasus map, but is wholly eye-candy, that mission editors have no control over. There's also a PRV-11 ["Side Net"] height finding RADAR. There's also a DRL-7 airfield surveillance RADAR.

All of these are animated, but none of them have any function so far apart from eye-candy.

But for BLUFOR I think we could do with RADARs such as:

  • AN/TPS-43E (suitable for the mid-to-late Cold War timeframe).
  • AN/TPS-77 (suitable for the late-ish Cold War to modern).

Is at Mount Olympus? AFAIK it used to be a Linesman/Mediator RADAR (AMES Type 84/85), though no idea what it is now.

Yes to both your suggestions.  I've been thinking on this for quite some time.  I've made missions where I really did not want to have an AWACs for BlueFor but had to because of limitations in mission editor choices regarding ground based radar systems.

I very much agree. Those radar domes scenery objects should be copy pasted into active mission units. This way, when required by the mission designer, we can remove the scenery object radar by trigger and replace it with an identical looking active EWR unit that serves a purpose in the mission.

And we definitely need usable EWR capable radar units for both blue and red. A perfectly suitable P-37 Bar Lock 3D model (perhaps the most widespread eastern GCI radar) has been in the game for years. This should be turned into a usable unit. These unit types are so important for Cold War scenarios before AWACS was a thing.

I am waiting for new EWR forever now, because the existing 1L13 and 55G6 have this annoying bug (reported since years) where they only return detected targets in the scripting environment within 120 km (instead of their true 300+ km range). This is a huge problem for creating GCI mission scripts for me. I lost any hope that this bug will ever be resolved, but perhaps a new EWR unit will not suffer from it?

Well hopefully the teased IADS changes will also bring these sorts of expansions/improvements as part of the associated platform update.

We've been waiting on the addition of the SA-5 for years too, which I wasn't too bothered about until OSINTing real-world SAM placements for accurate missions, and discovering 50% or so are SA-5's I need to make SA-2's until it arrives 😛

HighDigitSAMs do good stuff for modernising a few systems - it'd be nice to have S-400/S-500 or even just updates to the more potent long-range systems.  I suspect lack of declassified data will be the issue there, though.  That, and the usual bleating about balance of power where "most of our aircraft are pre-2000's so that's where the focus should be"...different conversation though!

I haven't been around for a while but I could swear I saw in passing that someone recently released a mod that was basically what I posted, and more?  Like a SAM sites object/scenery pack or something?  Also had generators and barbed wire etc but also some new radars.  Can't find it now might have been a WIP article somewhere obscure and I'm not sure if the radars worked but it's promising

Totally agree. One the airfield radars should work. They do IRL, and honestly any radar with a radio can be an EWR. It would add realism to airfield operations, and be essential to simulating an ATC. Also agree Bluefor needs an EWR bad.

Missing most of my hair and about 8 hours of my day, trawling my browsing history instead of looking in the mods forum...but I found what I was on about...I knew I wasn't going mad!

One of those things where people invest so much time into this sort of thing, to the point where it almost becomes a shame when it's implemented by default.  Maybe devs can reach out to the authors of this sort of thing for some sort of onboarding deal to get decent stuff like this into the base sim?  Similar to MB-339 only a deal to get it in as base content rather than a separate module etc.

Either way:

have a look at the wishlist thread in my siganture.

on many occasions i have proposed an EWR task, that could be added to every unit. it would allow the unit to act within the built-in EWR logic, by using the unit's own sensors. a radar equipped unit would obviously rely on it's radar, but even an infantry unit could act as EWR, but only relying on it's visual detection radius.

ideally there would be some options to configure update frequency and precision, so a unit without radar would maybe have random position errors, while infantry or other less integrated units would have a significant delay until the position of the enemy planes gets relayed into the EWR logic.

with that you could also set up primitive early warning system without radars, for example for WWII missions...

or you could set up AI controlled fighter planes to act as primitive EWR vectoring in friendly fighters... relying on their radar or eyesight only....
