I'm not really sure what you mean by the question.

My guess is that there's an intent to release both a modern and a historic version of the Marianas, so maybe that's why there could be variants.

I think he's supposing that Mariana Islands is close to release since it's already available in the map selection filter drop down menu in this current open beta build.
