I find in the latest OB (2.7.5), when I switch to gun, I select Target Designate Switch forward / PAL (binded to a key on the throttle), but nothing happens. I have to use PLM (also binded to another key on throttle) instead. This differs from Chuck's guide on AA gunnery.  Has this been changed somehow?

Thanks for looking at another noob question.

PAL works but doesn't show moving diamond when Gun is selected.

So, I should be using PLM then.  Thanks.

No, you should use one that is appropriate for the situation.

If you see the bandit and it's less than 5nm range, and it's feasible to point the nose (ADL) on him then PLM.

If you know only a possible direction and altitude of the bandit and you know it's within 15nm, then use PAL.

PAL works when something is right ahead of you, near where that cross is. You press it, hold it and the radar will lock on exactly what you have pointed your nose at. Once the target is locked, you release the button.

EDIT: ah i was sniped!

The original F-14 HUD (which is what our F-14 has) was quite limited in the type of symbols it could display and it could really only display one of each. So in the modes where the diamond is used for another purpose the PAL and VSL won't be visible on the HUD but they will still work. In the gun mode the diamond and the pipper are used for the RTGS sight so they are not available for use with the radar modes.

No. It's PLM.
