Aquorys Posted October 3, 2021 Posted October 3, 2021 Tested with DCS 2.7.6.13436 Current behavior: The ASE cue seems to point into the flight path of the target aircraft Desired behavior: The ASE cue should point into the ballistic trajectory that the AIM-120 wants to maneuver into after launch, so that the pilot can put the aircraft in an attitude where the missile will not have to maneuver after launch For testing: This is most obvious for high-altitude long-range missile shots, e.g. head-on, both aircraft at 30k ft altitude, distance ~30nm. The small circle will be displayed at the bottom of the large circle, indicating that the pilot should point the aircraft's nose down, but after the missile is launched, it will immediately pitch up about 30 degrees. Therefore, the ASE cue should show the small circle in the middle of the large circle when the aircraft is pointed into the ballistic trajectory of the missile, instead of into the flight path of the target aircraft. 1 F-16 / Su-33 / Ka-50 F-16 Checklists (Kneeboard compatible) F-16 BVR training missions
Frederf Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 ASE should command collision steering outside AIM-120 maximum range (R-aero) and missile launch steering when inside maximum range. Ideally the missile will not maneuver after launch when launched with steering cue centered in ASE circle. 1
Aquorys Posted October 4, 2021 Author Posted October 4, 2021 (edited) Yes, or to be more precise, the small circle (aka ASC) inside the large circle (aka ASEC, or ASE circle/cue) should indicate the course to intercept the target while you're not within the dynamic launch zone. Within the dynamic launch zone, it should switch to indicating the aircraft's ideal attitude for the missile firing solution. Edit: The current behavior appears to be that it always works as it should only outside of the DLZ Edited October 4, 2021 by Aquorys 1 F-16 / Su-33 / Ka-50 F-16 Checklists (Kneeboard compatible) F-16 BVR training missions
Ignition Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 I also noticed this since a long time ago. The steering cue is in the center, shoot an AIM-120 and the missile maneuvers even without the target changing any flight parameters. 1

Aquorys Posted October 7, 2021 Author Posted October 7, 2021 Here are some track files showing a simple demo scenario. Target drone at 31k ft. ASEC demo level flight.trk I'm flying level at 30k ft, ~370 kt, firing at 29.8 nm, missile impact after ~50 secs at ~690 kt / Mach ~1.7 ASEC demo intercept cue.trk I'm starting at 30k ft, then follow the intercept cue, ~370 kt, firing at 29.8 nm, missile impact after ~50 secs at ~690 kt / Mach ~1.7 ASEC demo firing solution.trk I'm starting at 30k ft, then fly into my guesstimate of where I think the missile would want to go, which is about 30 degrees up, ~370 kt, firing at 30.2 nm, missile impact after ~50 secs at ~860 kt / Mach ~2.3 I noticed that the intercept cue also seems to do something weird in general, because it constantly directed me to descend, although my target was head-on and above me from the start and maintained a low positive V/S.
