Newbie question on when do you put the start and landing airfields in a mission using the mission editor or F10 map?

If I want to insert the starting airfield and the landing airfield when using the mission editor or the F10 map and assume the landing airfield is the 6th way point, when and how do I tell the data cartridge the 4 digit codes for the airfields?  Before or after I load the data cartridge?  Or does the jet's computer automatically figure out the stuff from just the take off and landing way points in the ME?

It does indeed figure those out from the takeoff and landing waypoints if you use the mission editor cartridge

If you use F10 markers for waypoints you might need to set LS and L1 points as markers

The aircraft automatically takes the takeoff and landing waypoints from the mission editor (upon inserting the data cartridge and loading it with 9099) and assings them to LS and L waypoints respectively.

If you want to manually assign a base as takeoff or landing base from within the cockpit, you should do that after loading the data cartridge. Just type in the reference code in REF/LOLA and assign it either to the LS waypoint for takeoff or the L waypoint for landing.

Just to clarify, if there are 5 WPs leading up to the landing airfield and the landing airfield would be number 6, do you just put the 5 WPs in the data cartridge ( either from the F10 map or the ME) and then add the 4 digit code for the landing airfield manually in the jet after you load the data cartridge?  Or do you go ahead and put the landing WP as number 6 in the data cartridge and then override it in the jet with the 4 digit code?

A landing waypoint should be entered as L1/2, and not one of the regular nav points. So for F10 cartridge you can type "L1" on the airfield you want to land at, and it will set L1 at that airfield automatically. Or you could also enter the 4 digit code for the airfield manually on L1 after loading the cartridge, if you want it a bit more hands on.

So if you enter L1 in the F10, does the jet automatically then know all the info that is contained in the 4 digit code for that airfield (runway heading, QFE and ILS stuff)?  If not, then if you want to add the 4 digit code to L1, do you just override the computer by typing in the 4 digit code and then hitting the landing airfield

Yes, as long as the marker is placed on the airfield (or farp) it will automatically load in all the information needed.

Yes to both.
It's all done automatically, and you can manually set it if you did not set a L1 in the cartridge.

I really like this module and I am having fun learning it.

Yes

But again, if the mission comes with a flight plan this is already preset. It's usually just on public multiplayer missions that don't have preset flight plans, where you need to make your own waypoints (either through the F10 map or by inputting them in REF/LOLA). In singleplayer missions you rarely have to change the pre-assigned start and landing bases.

You are right, but I like to make my own simple missions to practice specific things.  I find that is the only way for me to learn how to do things.  Unfortunately, there is a lack of single player training missions.

When using an F10 map cartridge, the LS and L1 waypoints are automatically set to your current airfield without any need to specify them on the F10 map. You can set them, but it's not necessary.
