Will be nice make the same job for DCS. That map is a need for F-1 and Mig-23ML. Even when there were not many air battles. The aviation in both sides did a lot of ground attack.

We must try to find a viable alternative for the map, as we cannot develop it as a mod, and no delevoper showed interest on it. So I ask, would North Australia be a nice stand in? I say yes, north will be EAST, but...

Apart from that, we would need skins for the planes and choppers we have, and maybe create skins for the most similar planes possible like the MB339 (or the G.91R3 as a Impala...)

What others thnk?

Good Idea !!!!!!!!!!

The North of Namibia is pretty odd landscape (Ovamboland) with white white sand and palms and scattered green bush whilst the Caprivi area is dense bush red/yellow soil and very flat... to the west Kaokoland looks like the moon... dark red soil and very mountainous.... the Kunene river seperates most of the border there

Angola west is mountainous and desert eg the Namibe area, and most of South Angola is bush and to the east very marshy with plenty snaky rivers... further up it become hilly with dense rain forest and bush

We must buy already existing 3d models for the vehicles we need, in order to create a small assets pack. Then ask a modder to add them into DCS.

Things like the Mb326 can be represented using the 339 or the Fiat G.91. with a proper skin. We have a AI Alouette III already...

@Stratos There is a guy going by the name of "Sprinkbok" who made a mod for Squad and did some really nice work for that mod, he made some of the vehicles. Currently he is a bit busy and no longer has the time to work on it but just pointing out some nice modelling work that has already been done. Currenthill has made some nice asset packs for some countries, maybe he would be willing to make a ZA pack one day.

I'm sending out 30 FREE downloads of an eBook i published a few years ago

https://combat360.online/product/vlamgat-the-story-of-the-mirage-f1-in-the-south-african-air-force/

Vlamgat – The Story of the Mirage F1 in the South African Air Force
The Story of the Mirage F1 in the SAAF

Author: Dick Lord

The original Vlamgat book has all but been sold out and the publisher no longer longer exists. As there was still a strong demand for the book, the author got together with Combat360 Productions and decided to release an update as an electronic ebook.

Please take a few minutes to listen to the audio clip by the author

Great documentary on the Air War over Angola made by the Australian Military Aviation History on Youtube.

Uses a lot of DCS footage for the air-to-air simulations.

South Africa's Forgotten Air Wars

I have some specific details on day to day events, like take off times and locations, formations, loadouts etc. My dream is to one day tell some of these stories through Angolan Theatre campaigns. But a map requires a lot of 3D modelling and that is a big obstacle when it comes to South African content.

After a few years of working on a project (Cheetah C mod, not related to border war I know but the documentation and resources I have on it is unrivaled so I remain committed to it), I realized that the only people who are interested enough to make a commitment to working on these things are South Africans. And I have also realized most South Africans who are interested either don't have the skillsets or have the skillsets but cannot commit due to other side projects making part of their income. With the Cheetah C mod requiring 3D modelling, I have only encountered a few people from eastern Europe who seemed interested but not interested enough to make the commitment, or requiring me to pay their monthly salary which I cannot do out of my pocket. The modelling of one single aircraft, or a map, is at least a multi month endeavor. I have also met someone who can help with the CFD but even though he is a South African with a passion for SAAF aircraft, he could not commit due to his side projects taking priority as they produce income.

There are some people who worked on an Impala mod but that also came to a halt as far as I can see, looks like due to a lack of interest in development work.

I believe we can get a fleshed out Angolan Theatre in about a decade or two if we can overcome this obstacle of not having people with enough interest to make a commitment and the skills required to see a project through. I am only a programmer, and I understand how DCS aircraft are developed, and that is where I can spend my efforts. We have some documentation on Impalas and Mirages and maybe even the Buccaneer (I can check with someone maintaining the one at Ysterplaat), not enough for official modules but enough for EFM mods. I know there are people at Ysterplaat and Swartkop who will help when asked, they even opened the Cheetah E and C cockpits for me after years of not being opened. We also have many photos of the region from the time, especially the people in the `South African Border War: Operation Savannah` Discord channel for Arma and Squad mods.

Maybe we just need to congregate and put together what we have and then decide if we can achieve something with what we have, and then what we are going to work on and take it one project at a time.
