I’ve been learning the back seat over the past few weeks, I understand that the pulse search mode doesn’t use the zero Doppler filter meaning that you get ground returns. Does that mean that the pulse search mode should also see aircraft that are within 133kts of own aircraft speed?

We had a situation where we were sat behind a formation of russion bombers and I couldn’t pick them up on the AWG9 while in pulse search mode. We were at the same altitude and roughly the same speed, we were over the ocean so I didn’t see any ground returns on the scope.

There’s no filter in pulse

As said above, the pulse mode doesn't have any filters like the doppler modes. That's both an advantage and a disadvantage. It's much harder to find stuff in pulse due to less sensitivity and the range is also much less.

Don't expect to find the targets at pulse-doppler ranges. That said, pulse is hard to use so keep at it! 🙂

I’d recommend messing with the pulse video switch, pulse gain, etc to magnify returns. A contact can be super faint on the DDD in pulse if you don’t adjust your display accordingly

And the obvious, make sure you are looking at the DDD and not the TID (I've done that).

Haha thanks man, I’ll have another crack at it this weekend. Thanks everyone for your help.
