I wonder how they fly now, since there is no HUD and the helmet is not ready?

You still can have all the classic instruments displayed on this large HD TV:)

Wouldn't be easier to project everything on the glass of the cockpit? so what happened to the helmet; I told you guys a custom fitted helmet for each f-35 pilot is too much specially if they cost that much, That helmet needs to be universal or come in sizes with all the goodies as a detachable accessory.

No, if it was easier, it would have been done already. There are only a couple of planes that do this and only because the front canopy panel is flat -and- tilted at just the right angle. IIRC, the F-14 is one such suspect.

As for custom fitted helmets - that's nothing new. Air Superiority costs money, period. I'm not even sure if the current helmets resemble anything that could be called 'universal'.

Each and every swedish air force pilot has custom fitted helmets, that goeas for all other countries i suspect aswell. they just need to be air tight and not one head is shaped like another.

Every photo I see the pilots are wearing the F-35 helmet, I do not see them doing that if the helmet was not working.

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Navy Capt. Mike Saunders, 33rd Operations Group deputy commander, tries on the new F-35 Joint Strike Fighter helmet after getting measured for the new flight suit. The new pilot equipment includes everything from underwear to cold weather outer gear to anti-G garments. The measurement brought Eglin one step closer to being able to commence training, said Marine Col. Arthur Tomassetti, 33rd Fighter Wing commander. If the F-35 is anything like any other USAF aircraft, it will never stop upgrading. We were upgrading the F-117 while it was retiring, mostly because contracts were paid to companies, and if not completed, some of this companies would have had a breach of contract. F-16 is in a constant, non stop, state of upgrades.

f-117 "retired" mmm... are you sure?

Given that he works on aircraft for the USAF, he just might be certain.

Official retirement announcements aside ...

Yes, and why would the USAF need the F-117 anymore in the first place? After all, they have a perfectly good, fully operational, always-on-call, extremely reliable, stealth fighter replacement already in service! (*cough*)
