Diesel_Thunder Posted April 28, 2022 Posted April 28, 2022 Silly question, but is the Viper able to datalink targets (markpoints, etc) to other aircraft like the Hornet? I know Viper to Viper works, but not sure if the other aircraft are able to receive anything from the Viper. 1 PC: MSI X670E, Ryzen 9 7900X, 64GB DDR5 RAM, RTX 3090 Ti, TM Warthog HOTAS, Saitek Pro Flight pedals, Opentrack Link to my Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/DieselThunderAviation Commander, 62nd Virtual Fighter Squadron Join the 62nd VFS today! Ignition Posted April 29, 2022 Posted April 29, 2022 No, neither from other aircrafts. You can only see their SPI but you cant do anything with it.
Dragon1-1 Posted April 29, 2022 Posted April 29, 2022 Actually, it should be able to get some info from the A-10, via SADL. Not sure if that's implemented, but the Viper actually has two datalink systems. One is Link 16, which is what we have, and it also has the SADL datalink that works with other Vipers and with A-10s. It uses a comm radio, so the data exchange rounds go out only when commanded (or every few seconds in automatic mode) and produce an audible chirp in the headphones when it updates, instead of the "data" Betty announcement, but it can exchange ownship position and SPI between the two platforms that support it.

You have that wrong. Some F-16s that like the ANG use SADL instead of L-16. But the viper were getting has L-16 and IDM, no SADL
Dragon1-1 Posted April 29, 2022 Posted April 29, 2022 (edited) Right, and in fact, the thing I described, with the mic clicks and all, is how IDM works, not SADL. Actual SADL uses different frequencies and doesn't make any noise, as seen in its implementation in the A-10. I got them mixed up, for some reason I thought SADL is the older system, while it's actually the other way around. BTW, are we actually getting the IDM? I don't think it's already in, and I don't see it on the roadmap. It's a neat system with a lot of limitations (updates on command, can't talk and transmit at the same time), but it can be useful. I do believe they said we’re getting IDM
skywalker22 Posted April 29, 2022 Posted April 29, 2022 Both airplanes uses different type of link communication, so directly they cannot communicate, but with a help of AWACS they can. At least Viper up to 2007, afterwards it gor better avionics, so much more suitable link16 connectivity.
