There is a "VR preferences" file that is created in your save games folder that you need to delete in order to run the tool again.  Unsure what the file name might be as I don't use the tool since I am running with OpenComposite/OpenXR which doesn't need the correction.

Thanks for your help!

The folder:

<yourusername>\Saved Games\DCS

Filename where the cross-eye setting is stored for Varjo Aero is either "hedy.lua" or just ".lua" depending whether it was running through OpenComposite or not. You can see the .lua extensions on file names by ticking "File name extensions" option on in the View ribbon of File Explorer window.

Other headsets use different file names. Valve Index setting is stored in Index.lua, for example.

If using OpenComposite with Varjo, there should be no need to change the cross-eye tool values, it will only result to the fishbowl-effect. In SteamVR, a possible fishbowl-effect on Varjo is removed by using the tool and switching the top-bottom values.

The Aero uses NIVIDIA’s DSC compression video and that lowers the bandwidth requirement for rendering vs headsets that don’t use it.  Foveation right now is mostly gimmick and only works with Varjo workspace and very few apps.  It may help performance but at the expense of blurry peripheral vision when you glance around quickly.

Interesting. I often wondered if it would be possible to glimpse the downgraded peripherals when using FR, as we *can* still see many things that we may not be looking at directly. Do you happen to know anything about the foveated rendering that comes with the open XR toolkit? Is that also just a bit of a gimmick and would/does it work better (or at all) with Aero headsets that actually support FR? I've noticed that with the app/'mod' running it *does* downgrade the quality of the images on my monitor!

Foveated rendering works but I think of it as something that improves performance but not necessarily image quality.  One easy example of this is Varjo Workspace desktop, which uses eye tracking FR.  Now the problem is that while it works it doesn’t give a very good first impression of the headset to new owners, because the gamma setting is off resulting in crushed blacks and blown out whites, plus foveation causes loss of detail in peripheral vision—bring up a web browser on a page with small texts and you’ll see fuzzy fonts when glancing to the sides.

These visual issues fortunately are not present with SteamVR overlay or other 3rd party virtual desktop apps because they don’t use foveation and have correct gamma calibration.  Why Varjo leaves their Worksapce app in its current state is beyond me because on a high res HMD like this there is no need to supersample central imaging area while degrading the peripheral area as the central part is already sharp enough.  In addition, destop virtualization has very little effect on performance so you can just supersample the entire FOV.  What this does instead is giving misrepresentation of the Aero as being only marginally better than your older headset when it comes to clarity and image fidelity.  Open up SteamVR overlay or Virtual Desktop and you will see significant improvement in image quality, especially with web browsing or movie watching.

My Varjo Aero headset stopped working today.  Initially it shut down and started up during gaming ( lens movement each time) several times, then it stopped working.

Now the Varjo Base say that the headset is not connected. (all regular tests done).

Any tips on what happended?

( I have contacted the support and sent in a log file etc).

For me this was typically due to loose connection at the USB-C port in the left upper compartment of the headset.  But it could be anything related to the port, the cable or the USB-DisplayPort adapter interface.  Contacting tech support is your best bet because there’re too many possibilities and they can help narrow it down.

Well I did that already before the post yesterday.

You know, the hope still is there for a even quicker resulotion.

When I woke up, there was an answer from the support. Good. They asked med to uninstall varjo bae, nut I just installed it on my former gaming rig (now my sons).  No joy. After installation there was no connection between the varjo base(computer) and the headset. A brief "a usb device is not recognized" and blue flashes on the headset.

I guess something is broken. As everything worked very very nice with DCS I was reluctant to uninstall varjo base and install it back. My long term experience is that a new install with low numbers of "fixing things" is best. Yes, I have a mirror of the operative system disc saved, but anyway....

So, tomorrow I will see if I still need to uninstall and install varjo base only to find some hardware broken. Remember, I have had these headset dropouts since last spring when the headset was only a couple of months and maybe 20 hours of gaming. I thought it was some kind of software bug. Hope this fix these dropouts. Not good in assetto corsa at 300km/h as well as in DCS in combat, or close formation.

Sounds like that thing should have been replaced months ago. Hit Arch up over on Discord and see if he can help you.

I did get good help from the support. New parts on the way, most likely the 5m usb C cable or the adapter that connects to it.

Only issue I ever had with my Aero since getting it a year ago - my Link Box went out on me, this was a few months ago had replacement in two days and it has been great ever since.  I was getting some very slight and intermittent blackouts occasionally while flying, I flipped the USC C cable that goes into headset around  and plugged back in, and it has been rock solid ever since - and that was a few months ago. Overall I have been very pleased with my Aero.

Current state of opencomposite vs SteamVR - is there a clear preference for one or the other?  Supumua recommended Steam VR in part for the ability to use Reshade. He also recommended turning down the per-app resolution in SteamVR.  Curious though - if we turn down the resolution anywhere in the rendering pipeline, won't the quality suffer?  Thanks in advance!

I myself prefer the simplicity of Steam VR. Did not much care for going down the rabbit hole of all those Open XR Toolkit settings and I did not see that much a performance difference on my end. Have not tried it since getting this 4090 GPU though, may give it another shot just to see.

What's your SteamVR per-app resolution set to, and what PPD on the Aero are you using?

Steram VR per app is 90%. 3648x3128 per eye.

Varjo  Base on default of Hi. Vsync on locked at 45 fps. ( no motion reprojection().

DCS PD 1.0.

I havent tried OpenXR, as I did get performance ”good enough” with SteamVR and 13900/4090.

I do not get 90fps all the time, but the average fps is quite high and the cpu does not limit at all —> complex missions do not bog down the cpu.

100% Resulotion in steamVR (4146 x 3X00?)

PD in DCS 1.0.

Varjo highest Pixels per degree setting.

No Vsync, do not use motion reprojection.

I think you're using the wrong *.exe file.  Should be DCS.exe, not the DCS_updater.exe.

weird...  This is how it's copied and pasted from my shortcut target box  "C:\Program Files\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World OpenBeta\bin\DCS.exe" --force_steam_VR

it looks identical to what you have there.  I'm stumped.

Insure you have a space after the " and before the first - .

Also there is no apostrophe at the end. This is mine however mine is installed on drive D.
