Just noticed: when the JTAC/FAC asks for a specific weapon to be used, both the text and the sound is missing in case of Maverick is requested[possibly others too, haven't tested them, but the request cannon works]. It only says/writes "use" or "request" without the weapon being specified.

This happens because you have no TGP. The same happens with Maverick F. And there's a small twist with GBU-12s: JTAC asks the pilot to use the cannon instead.

I see two issues here:

  • If the JTAC thinks the pilot cannot use laser-guided missiles, why not asking for cannon, just like it does it with GBU-12?
  • Since the JTAC is able to lase for us, why would he reject laser-guided weapons in the first place?

I'll ask devs about this.

  • Thanks 1

FWIW I can confirm what @Flappie says. I'm invoking all this from a lua script BTW:

Task = AFAC = A10-A, carrying only WP

Player F-18 + Lightning Pod

Player Weapon

- MK82, et or GBU 12,16, etc = FAC response,  "use cannon"

- MK20 and Rockets = correct response

- Mav's - I forget which one worked, either IR or laser, but the other didn't and returned a 'blank' audio clip as in, "use ____ "

Haven't tested any others.

Thanks.

Update:

  • Since 2.8, JTACs can now name AGM-65E and AGM-65F (e.g. "request AGM-65E"). ✅
  • Devs told me that JTACs are programmed to ask for cannon when the target is "soft" (truck , light tank). Example: if you target a T-72, JTAC will ask for GBUs. If you target a truck, JTACs will ask for cannon (unless your ammo is depleted). This is expected behaviour.
  • An issue is yet to be solved: when an aircraft carries a gunpod, JTACs answer "request [nothing]" (reported in another thread).

"truck", not "tank"

ED please give players the ability to force laser designation.

I think it heavily depends on the environment if you would go in with cannon, or stay high & be safe when the area is infested with AAA and SHORADs.

90% of the time people want to drop laser guided weapons when they use the JTAC feature, and it's very common to attack soft targets with laser guided weapons.

In my honest opinion, it should be the other way round: JTAC should always ask for laser weapon first, and only call for guns if the player is out of laser weapons. No sane pilot would go below 10000ft and use guns if he's got standoff weapons under his wings.

In DCS, you can always attack a laser designated spot with cannon, sure, it's not what the JTAC asked, but nothing stops you from doing it. But it's frustrating if you need a laser and the DCS JTAC just flat out refuses to lase, for whatever reason.

Something like "always laser", "always IR pointer" "always both" in ME would be nice to have. Oh, and manual real time singleplayer lasing using ground units would make a great CA QoL update... 🙂

You can always set your JTACs to not allow requesting cannon, but that's the other end and you might end up with cannon only and not cleared to the target. Ideally there should be a list of priorities which can be set by the user through ME/scripting - ie. prio 1 LGBs, prio 2 dumb bombs, prio 3 cannon... etc.

If I remember correctly jtac in dcs was implemented for the A-10C so they had to prioritize the f*ckin gun :)
But jokes aside, some improvements for the AI jtac would be very welcome. lat long coordinates will certainly help too :)
